One of Nintendo's early smash arcade hits, and an amazingly unforgiving game by today's standards. Mario the plumber tries to climb arrangements of steel girders and ladders to reach the captive princess at the top while her captor, the big ape Donkey Kong, throws or rolls barrels down at him. Mario can hop to avoid barrels, and score a few bonus points, but they keep coming down relentlessly, and start to combine with other threats, like wandering fires. The control is stiff, but very precise, and the game is very exacting; intense concentration is needed to stay alive more than a few seconds, and while you'll need to plan ahead a few barrels in navigating your way upwards, the random intervals at which DK releases them, coupled with environmental threats coming from other directions, means that someone with little experience in the game, such as myself, will often just have to make a break for it and take their chances. Fun but very unforgiving.
