3D fighters on the PS1 rarely looked this good, or had a story mode this extensive, with SD 2D cutscenes between each fight.

Unfortunately Lightning Legend lacks the gameplay to back up the fine presentation: normal attacks are limited and sluggish so almost all the real damage is done by each character's massive chain combo or by their super move, which charges up only by holding down a button--the button charge is real fast though, in fact you can charge about 70% of the way up while the opponent is getting up from your last super. And then for some reason there are two or three separate throw buttons--perhaps a clue to beating the last boss, who floats ten feet above the ground and pounds you with cheap beam attacks until you realize that he literally can't see a throw coming to save his life.

Nice packaging (hey, this is KCET after all) but something of a brick under the wrapper. Still, it's good to know that somewhere there's a character named "Terrific Forelock."
