The horizontal shooter series goes 3D and trades most of its charm for the overrated third dimension. The ships go from neatly-drawn sprites to polygonal garbage, the backgrounds have turned into mostly black junkyards with a few spots of nice lighting effects, and auto-targetting weapons, feeble sound effects, non-descript bosses, generic stage design and slack pacing suck out what life remained in the gameplay. There are some nice graphic effects, certainly, and slowdown too. Maybe it gets more exciting later or something, but R-Type II is much more exciting to me.

Now, maybe I was a bit harsh and overdoing the "2D roxorz" thing when I wrote the first part of this little impressionette, as I've since gone back and found some things to like here, namely the music, some of the graphic effects and the charge weapons. I've also noticed that the game is really, really hard, and at least for me some of this difficulty comes from the way in which it's hard to spot the minute little guns and bullets among all the chunky 3D detail onscreen. That part isn't cool.

And yes I still think they should have stayed 2D but I should probably just go get some means of playing R-Type III and work out my frustrations that way.
