An impressive port, particularly compared to some of SNK's other efforts (KOF '96 *cough*). Large character sprites don't seem to produce any obvious slowdown or animation loss. There's a weird loading pause after the stage loads, right before you gain control of your fighter, but other than that load times don't jump out at you. As in the second game (in the Kenkaku Yubinan Pack), sword-slash and other effects have lost some detail and look a bit chunky but if that's what it takes to get smooth 2d fighting action on the PS, I'm not gonna complain.

I've never liked SS III or IV nearly as much as the first two games in the series but as ports go, this one's pretty good.

Huh, looks like SSIV was only released in Japan on PS1. I was *wondering* why I had the Japanese version... It's too bad, because one of the few things I liked about the English version was the win quotes, and the PS1 Japanese version doesn't have an English language option.

You can't map attack to shoulder buttons, which sucks for those wanting to put all the attacks in a single four-button row on a joystick, SNK arcade style.
