Wide-screen vertical shooter of some fame on Saturn, in the arcade it was on Sega's arcade board whose name I forget but which was pretty much a Saturn.

I didn't like this too much the first couple times I played it, arcade or Saturn, because six weapons right off the bat just seemed a little more than I wanted to be troubled with. It's also rather slow paced and very unforgiving, with a grueling combo system, much like developer Treasure's own later vert shooter Ikaruga (entry 129). Howsomever, the six weapons, especially the bullet-absorbing giant sword, offer a significant amount of depth once you start to figure out how to use them (which takes especial getting-used-to with the arcade version's three-button layout) and the frequent and epic boss battles cannot fail to impress. Certainly a shooter that could take quite some time to "master."
