They really shouldn't have tried this game, at least not so early on in the NGPC's life. The slowdown is atrocious. They remedy that for the most part in the sequel, but they don't really solve the problem of translating the incredibly sprite-heavy Metal Slug console games on to the very sprite-limited NGPC.

For one thing they decided it could move as fast, and had to be more vertical (perhaps to take advantage of the NGPC's relatively tall screen), so they made it more of a platformer than a run-and-gun, greatly to the detriment of the "gun" part of that equation. There just isn't enough gleeful blowing stuff up, and what there is is generally blighted by horrid slowdown.

There's also an annoying continue system whereby you have a limited number of lives/continues. I'm currently stuck at a stage involving a long tedious fight with a submarine, I have no continues/lives left, and the slowdown is particularly awful. It's just painful and I don't think I'm ever going to get past it.
