| | | I won't go in to the absurd water-triggered gender-swapping antics of the irrepressible Ranma 1/2 anime--suffice it to say that they are captured here in superb detail, complete with musical selections from the show, lengthy and attractive anime-style cutscenes, full voice acting, and even some flashes of young frontal nudity. In other words, playing through the game feels a lot like watching a season of Ranma 1/2 in concentrated form.
It also feels like playing a not-so-great 2D fighting game. Some encounters are fun, such as dodging barrels in the bath thrown by that lecherous squid-faced old man, Happousai, or going combat-style rythmic gymnastics against that ice queen Kodachi. But then you come up to someone who simply unplayfully kicks your butt, and you realize that the stodgey "controls" just aren't much fun.
You get one attack button that can either do a chain attack when pressed rapidly, kicks in midair, or a charge rapid-punch type attack (that takes a really long time to charge up). The other button jumps. Bluh. The curious thing is that the characters move left and right at something approaching a crawl, so to get anywhere you have to jump. The animation of the fighters sucks and the backgrounds look incredibly plain. Every few rounds or "episodes" or whatever you do some kind of card guessing game with an annoying fat fellow.
Ranma fans will eat up the impressively presented voices and cutscenes, and will no doubt enjoy at least some of the weirder combats. People who don't enjoy Ranma--well, why are you even reading this? |
