A British group with a Welsh female vocalist, Kosheen lay down a plentitude of drum and bass beats and hard-edged lyrics. A fair amount of electronic tweaking goes on to complement the sound. The tracks vary from driving dance ("Hide U") to more laid-back trip-hoppish compositions ("Face in a Crowd"). The singer does best with the driving stuff, seeming a little uncertain of carrying the softer tunes. But give her the hard beat and she can cut it up, wielding her tough voice like a hatchet. "(Slip & Slide) Suicide" has got to be my favorite by far, a kickin' dark tune with turgid bass and alternately crooned and belted cryptic lyrics.

The rest of the tracks are no slouches, mind you, just a little more downbeat. The band succeeds in giving each one a different sound, no mean feat with 16 tracks to handle.

This Japanese special edition has a second CD sporting another 16 tracks of both remixes and additional songs, again all very good material.

I'm not sure what's with the long number on the end of the title, but there you go.

A lot of the tracks on the second CD throw acoustic guitar into the mix. Acoustic guitar features much more prominently in Kokopelli, their next album, and they're still sort of learning how to use it here.
