weary from struggling across shifting sands
the man--the boy--sat in the shade of a massive dune
a frozen wave from the sea as distant as a dream
the wave would disappear first
then the dune, dissolving into the desert
only the boy would remain
the boy, immortal, rose to his feet
brushed sand from his clothing
and walked down the dune
