| | Capcom continues to cash in on successes of old with this collection of games from the Mega Man X series, which spanned the Super Nintendo and PlayStation--Mega Man X through Mega Man X6, to be specific. They also threw in Mega Man Battle & Chase, or something. It's nice to have these games all on one tiny disc, so I can now put all my PS1 versions out to pasture, but there are some drawbacks here that needn't have happened. For starters, there's no progressive scan support. Bah. Second, Battle & Chase (or whatever--I've yet to see it) is not available at first, and must be unlocked by--get this--beating the first three of the Mega Man X games here. Damn it, I just want to play Battle & Chase! Why should I have to beat all those other games to do it? At least you can save at the end of stages in the old X games. I'd prefer to have been able to save anywhere--and in fact there's a total lack of a pause menu for the collection itself while you're playing any of the X games, which is pretty inefficient. For instance, if you're playing one game and you want to switch to a different one, as far as I can tell you have to die in the first one until you get taken to the Continue screen. The emulation and all that seemed fine in the little bits I played. Oh, the main menu interface they slapped on the collection sucks. Note to developers the world over: do not make your interface a honeycomb of tightly packed hexagons, with colors sprewed seemingly at random. Nobody likes that. |
