Two-session playthrough on my first ever try of Akumajou Densetsu for Famicom! It's the Japanese version of Castlevania III: a little easier than the US version, according to https://tcrf.net/Castlevania_III:_Dracula%27s_Curse/Regional_Differences#Gameplay_.28JP_to_US.29 , and, unlike the US version, sporting its own dedicated sound chip, allowing it to blast out some of the most amazing music ever on Nintendo's 8-bit console!
 
I mispronounced the title at the start! It's more like aku-mah-joe.
 
Huh jeez and somehow it got a "cover song" copyright claim on the last two minutes of loop play, that's...weird. Probably just an algorithm got confused. Maybe it was my melodic voice! Anyway I cut it. : P

A little over half an hour in, when meeting Sypha and finding there was mid-game Japanese text (this ended up being pretty much all of it ; ) I stopped the recording and applied the English fan translation patch by Vice Translations: https://www.romhacking.net/translations/730/
 
Notes after session 1:
 
The game inserts several rows of blank tile space under the top UI in vertical scroll areas like the tower climb with stained glass windows around 6:02, and the long red tower climb later on. This shoves the game display down and the UI up--and cuts off their bottom and top, respectively, in my careful cropping of the screen. : P So in theory I should reduce that cropping (which also perfectly fit Castlevania I and I THINK II) but I think it's silly so I'm not gonna. : P
 
Not grabbing me as much as the first game. It moves away from Gothic romance and into more generic platforming.
 
Although the background tile work is gorgeous and that custom chip in the Japanese cart makes the music RIP.
 
And the owls are neat.
 
Oh, I see--that FAQ was messing with me about Sypha.

Next up is the X68000 port in Castlevania Chronicles on PS1--they say that one's pretty tough so probably'll be another multi-session monstrosity. OH WAIT I won't be able to abuse save states in that since I'm going to be playing it in an actual PS2. = o Oh shoot, I didn't think this through, this might not work at all! ... Well I guess that's why they made the Arranged version on that same disc, so maybe I'll end up just having to go to that~~ Will I even be able to get through THAT...?
 
(I think I said in the video that the Arrange mode redrew the graphics again--that is incorrect. It does add subtle glows to fire FX though.)
