Bounced hard off the PS3 version (see entry 1282) back in the day in a failed I'm gonna e-sports bid, but started taking another look at the game as a counter to the slower & more complicated SF6 (see entry 1598) I was seeing in streams.

The is in windowed mode when you first run it and there's no in-game menu option to switch to full-screen--you just gotta know the keyboard shortcut, Alt+Enter. Once you've done that, it stays, thank goodness.

I shouldn't have slandered Cammy's Japanese voice acting, that was wrong and I'm an ass. I should also just switch it over to the English one my culturally sheltered ignorant self can probably handle better, now that I've unlocked (!) the per-character language option.

The STEAM STORE menu item doesn't actually go to the Steam store--but it does re-check for DLC, so that sort of works---after I found that there was ONE little costume pack left--for Decapre, Hugo, etc--that isn't included in the three larger DLC packs that have everything else.

I'm still a Steam noob and I was surprised by how poorly the Steam store handles the DLC listings. It doesn't tell you which ones you already own until you look at them in your cart, it lists one (all-in-one 2011) that is already included in the purchase of the full Ultra game (but maybe not in the upgrade from Super or whatever? that's the only reason I can think it would be there; also, even the non-upgrade version identifies as Super in OBS's window capture selection menu ^ _^), and it makes it real hard to tell that it mysteriously leaves this one small costume pack out.

Also, as far as I could tell (and I'm still not super-clear on this, I couldn't find a list or something about it), I THINK the PS4 version includes two of those three big costume packs that the Steam version makes you buy separately for an additional $40--at least, the only one available for separate purchase on PS4 is the Horror one; and the PS4 version was also $5 cheaper than the Steam version, not even counting unincluded DLC. But eh I convinced myself that the Steam version would have better input delay and load times--even though I couldn't actually find recent info on input delay in either version; and come to think of it, load times on PS5 might be at least as good? I have no idea. Maybe input delay would be worse on PS5 though for all I know, that seems to have been a trend in some other stuff. Well who knows, now I'm just trying to justify my silly purchase. : P Anyway it runs good even on my ~4 yr old middling gaming laptop--300 fps in the BENCHMARK mode with everything except motion blur (didn't try, but don't usually like motion blur) cranked to max. : P Sheesh! Huzzah for old 3D games!

I bounced off the PS3 version back in 2009 after trying to go e-sports ^ D^, didn't think much more about it after one last PS3 playthrough in 2016, but so far I'm enjoying it here in 20xx. The AI is more fun to fight against than the AI in all the other SFs I just tried, and the variety of characters and stages is a lot of fun.

SSFIV (of which this is a DLC upgrade, technically) was ported to PC by QLOC of Warsaw, Poland, which was the source of all the Polish names in the credits whose header I missed. It was one of their first ports, in 2011. Since then they've ported lots of other stuff including SFxT, MKXL, MK11 ( https://q-loc.com/about-us/ ), and apparently ( https://wccftech.com/mortal-kombat-1-pc-system-requirements-are-relatively-tame/ ) the upcoming reboot MK1 PC port.

Ken Master in a cowboy costume, E.Honda in some kind of horned devil costume, and Ibuki in a Gothic Lolita outfit and makeup!

Played super garbagey as Ken but he's so strong it didn't even matter. = o

Found with E.Honda that I could just command-throw the CPU on its wake-up--over and over! Even the boss!!! Kind of broken. ; D This was just on the default Normal (3) difficulty, though.

Did better than I thought I would with the more complicated Ibuki, mostly just using her kicks and uppercut kick special move. Didn't work against the boss, though! So what to do? Oh yeah, she has a command grab. That worked. ; D Too late to get the 1cc as her though, drat!

Her uppercut kick crushed those beer barrels, though! I'm so horrible at that usually--the turning around is awful. : P

SF4 was co-developed by Dimps, whose founder Takashi Nishiyama directed the original Street Fighter, Fatal Fury, and King of Fighters.

Dimps also co-developed SF5. : P

Characters I haven't enjoyed playing so far in SFIV: Makoto

Her moves are just all over the place, one of the 3rd Strike jigsaw puzzle characters. I'm too dumb to play that way, just give me hittin' buttons.

Dudley lookin' all tough in his black leather jacket. (Secret costume: if you pick the white color for this costume, he goes without the jacket! = o)

Just jab-comboed my way through the regular cast uh except for Hakan but the boss could out-box me! Not to mention his command grabs, anti-airs, supers and ultras. Actually, after like the third match or so I was having a huge problem just activating my darned Ultra, I guess I was rushing it; didn't seem able to cancel it from anything either, I don't think.

Ah, yeah: https://www.eventhubs.com/moves/sf4/dudley/move/super-and-ultra/ultra-1/

"Rolling Thunder is an amazing Ultra against Shotos and other people who zone with projectiles, like Sagat, as Rolling Thunder avoids any projectile completely and is good for punishing. The bad thing about this move though is that there is no way (at least that I know of) to combo into this Ultra, otherwise though, this Ultra is worth it for its punishing prowess."

So I might be better off with his other Ultra, to be able to cancel into it, I dunno.

Oh so anyway finally landed on his juke-punch qcb+K thing to get Seth, esp. the EX one.

  paleface 18:07:23 06/28/23

I like Seth's robot costume. : )

Ended up having serious problems against anyone fast--including Dictator and his fast moves.

Seth is like the apex predator of jank and I had a lot of trouble executing his moves. Hopefully by the end I at least figured a few things out so next time won't be quite as bad:

- can't get his 360 grab to grab unless it's off a naked jump-in, pretty much...or maybe from neutral : P
- which really shouldn't work except the game also tends to count my qcf fireball attempts as 360s, so it may be a weeeee bit too generous on input reading, which is REAL annoying
- his standing HK is good
- his standing HP is his stretchy low punch...which I couldn't figure out because I'd ASSumed all along it was a down punch. sigh
- his qcb+K works kinda good but not really against jump-ins, its hit window is weirdly narrow
- like Dudley, his Ultra I doesn't seem to be cancellable, which means I pretty much can't get it to come out except on wake-up : P
- so use his Ultra II. Don't worry, the AI loves to run into it, and they aren't very good at blocking it, either
- his jumping HK is pretty good; kinda avoid his jumping MK unless you really want to pogo because otherwise the range is just too weird / hurtbox too narrow
- FB recovery time just about too long for uppercutting

I switched Ultras midway through trying to beat Dictator and then forgot I'd switched Ultras and flailed and cried for a while trying to do Ultra I when I was actually on Ultra II. ;D;;

Modern-ish SFs drive me nuts because they took all the jank and bugs from SFII and were like okay we have to codify this, everything has to be like this now forever.

Hey, THAT'S STREET FIGHTER!™

JUST GOTTA LEARN IT!™

Which is all to say I'm terrible at SF. ; [] Oh well. I THINK I can have some fun playing Seth, if I can remember how to use him. ...

Man, Gouken rules! = oo : D He's so fun to play! I'm only a little over 1/6th through the USFIV cast, he's the first I've felt like yeah I could definitely main this dude.

His moves are scrambled shoto: his fireball varies angle by strength (EX shoots one straight and one slightly up to catch jumpers ; D), his uppercut motion punch is more like a tatsu (flying punch), his tatsu is more like an uppercut. I thought this was gonna cause me problems but I got used to it a lot quicker than I thought I would--and by the end, was kind of rolling!

His EX uppercut motion punch move goes right through fireballs and other stuff, yeeee. ^ _^

His Ultra II super fireball seemed to go right through someone point blank when I tried it on wake-up (I'm so lame), so I stuck with Ultra I, an uppercut, which does work on wake-up.

Couldn't seem to use his tatsu like a wake-up uppercut.

Can combo light uppercut-motion into heavy tatsu or heavy uppercut motion into light tatsu, but seemingly only in the corner.

Crouching lk,lk,hk seemed way too effective at poking away at a lot of the AIs. ; ) Crouching mk is a kick up to the head, which is pretty neat.

He's got more moves I pretty much forgot about: a variable parry on uppercut motion uh maybe back something, and an uppercut motion some way kick thing I think that does a jumping slide kick or you can modify as it comes down with punch, which turns it into a feint, kick, which changes it into a dive kick, or throw, which does an air throw--probably quite useful for catching the unwary.

Love all his zombie costume skin colors I've tried so far. Wish all characters had variable skin colors!

To make shortcut that can pin to the taskbar for Steam apps, look up the rungameid in the weird "Internet" shortcut Steam makes, then take that number and plug into a shortcut with Target Properties like this--where 45760 is the number for USFIV (actually SSFIV but nevermind...):

"C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steam.exe" -applaunch 45760

I'm a bad Akuma. : P My Raging Demon crumbles under the slightest pressure. ^ _^ He's got way more moves than I can fit in my tiny brain. Also, his FBs do way less dmg than Ryu's! Doohhhh that Ryu!

Oh wait I'm good with him against barrels! ^ _^ First time I got 'em all! df+HP!

The wide-eyed expression as someone is about to get hit by an Ultra in this game is so fun. o_O ^ D^

Gen: two stances, short-ish range, charge moves, boomeranging movement/animations--not my thing. Particularly hosed myself getting caught in his repeating quick-stab cycle while just trying to do an Ultra. : P

Started whining like a jerk here, getting frustrated how many fights were coming down to just bashing out traded hits--the fallback of the unskilled. ; ) Sakura though does feel like her usual slightly underpowered self, of course; in that regard this didn't go TOO badly right at the end.

Really mostly just that creepy stalker T-Hawk, he just gets to trade hits whenever he wants, ie at the end of the match to make it go as long as possible. Argh! what a jerk. : PPP

Sure does feel clunky sometimes.

Oni. Another ancient demon shoto, not really notably different as far as I managed to notice. Multi-hit uppercut's pretty satisfying.

I never managed to get into a groove with Elena in 3rd Strike really but I had fun hacking away at shins and "rhino horning" opponents off their gourds here, so hey! Also her zombie / mummy costume is pretty good.

  paleface 12:12:19 08/17/23

Like, her unusually long legs really seem to mess people up; she can whiff kicks huge and then duck so low she escapes being punished for the big miss.

  "Yun's weird adventure"

So Yun's story is that he's stalking Chun-Li--a police officer!!--and just decides to follow her on her case "to keep an eye on her," finds her, says nothing to her, fights her (oh it did say that was his rival match), then goes home and doesn't mention her again. : P

According to the internet, "Hoimei" (or "Hoi Mei" as some sites render it) who shows up at the end to berate Yun for disappearing (although this doesn't make sense strictly speaking since she's standing in the middle of the skate ramp background during his fight vs Rolento 'p') is a "childhood friend" who seems to have a one-sided attraction to him--but he puts up with her stereotypical 'nagging' so eh it's all pretty weird. The wiki refers obliquely to what sound like a few more scenes probably from Yang's arcade mode that will run alongside these....for some reason. ; )

Anyway I found Yun much less confusing to use here than I did in 3rd Strike. Mostly I could just EX dash punch at people, and crouch punch or kick or standing heavy double-kick (for knockdown) to get out of trouble if they blocked; EX uppercut-kick also seemed pretty decent, probably. Had to switch to his dive kick (df+K in air) vs Zangief though, otherwise he just threw me out of everything. = o

Finally realized that you don't need to hit straight up in the barrel bonus stage, you can just stand to the side the hit to the side. : PP That worked much better. Also, his flying punches shredded that car in some kind of record time.

Playing through the Steam version of Ultra Street Fighter IV as Juri (Han Ju-ri)!

The AI mostly isn't very good at stopping her dive kick--but her darned rival, Dictator, kind of is. EX backflip kick thingy could get me out of trouble sometimes. Kept EXing the dive kick which adds a wall bounce but I didn't know how to combo it--backflip didn't seem to go in time, and I didn't look up what you're supposed to combo it with. : P She doesn't have to stock her short-range projectile like she does in later SFs, and its EX is okay for getting people out of your face in a pinch.

I like her jester / harlequin costume. : D

Can't seem to do much with her super, and still annoyed her fireball is charge. ; ) That energy ball Ultra is always fun in whatever game it's in though. ^ _^

Oh right, her ending does intersect with Yun's intro, he's standing right there in the first shot.

I got his story totally mixed up; still think it would'a been better if he'd been searching for the puppy's owner. ^ _^

I completely mispronounced "moire"; it's like "mwar," I said "moy-ree." ; D

  paleface 14:35:19 08/29/23

Ah, Abel's Ultra II ("Breathless") IS unblockable. Here's what sounds like (I don't know, I'm a noob!) a good comparison of his ultras, from https://gaming.stackexchange.com/questions/179193/what-are-the-differences-between-soulless-and-breathless :

"The big difference between Ultra 1 and Ultra 2 is that Ultra 2 (Breathless) is a command grab. You can avoid it by jumping, or using a move that has invincibility, but you cannot block it. The armour allows you use it as an anti-air, assuming their attack doesn't cross-up.

Ultra 1 on the other hand can be blocked, but has two important properties: Firstly it's an armour breaker, secondly it can be easily comboed into with his cr.HP "Elbow launcher". His launcher can in turn be comboed into by (normal) FADCing the first hit of his Change of Direction (QCF+P). Even if you mess up and cancel on block you can try a risky grab or roll.

They both so a similar amount of damage, with soulless having an entirely negligible advantage but being scaled to a lower amount if you combo into it. A raw Ultra 2 will deal more damage, than comboing into ultra 1. This is important because comboing into ultra 1 will be the most likely scenario, compared to ultra 2, which you will likely hit as a mixup (note: it can be jumped out of on reaction) or by using the armour."

I'm useless with C.Viper. Nothing feels like it hits/works like my extremely limited skills need it to. Can't seem to land most of her jump kicks, even. Does she even DO a jump kick with HK? Doesn't really look like she does. (But EventHubs lists "Diagonal Jump Heavy Kick" for her https://www.eventhubs.com/moves/sf4/cviper/ so I guess she does?) Baffled. Can't land her big showpiece flip kick. Ability to do her air Ultra II falls apart. A lot of her EX moves seem to come out SLOWER than the non-EX versions. Most I could sort of manage was crouch elec punch (qcb-LP), then maybe heavy sweep. Miserable.

I can't really do all of M.Bison's loopy charge move stuff so mostly I just did his db-HK slide and sometimes his charge-back flip-kick--'specially the EX 'cause that goes through most everything, super-cheap-style.

Bison's such a jerk.

Sagat's okay. Doesn't feel like the massive cannon he feels like in CvS, though Ryu was kind of running circles around my lumbering attempts. His Tiger Knee is a lot more horizontal here, I suppose in an attempt to differentiate it from his uppercut; EX still real good as a "get off me." Kept flailing his Ultra II 'cause it's Punches instead of Kicks, can never get my silly head around the characters that reverse those. : P Also I seemed mechanically nearly unable to go from my awful sweep spam abuse to Tiger Knee but let's not dwell on that continuing fumble fingers trait of mine.

  paleface 19:10:02 09/04/23

The AI didn't really block Cammy's very punishable specials, so that was handy. They didn't deal well with Dee Jay's rangy standing HK and especially MK, or Cody spamming his tornado. I couldn't figure out what to spam with Guy, so that was kinda rough--relied mostly on mixing sweeps and jump kicks, maybe. With Hakan I flailed at 360s and 720s and surprisingly it actually kind of worked.

According to https://streetfighter.fandom.com/wiki/Cody , in Final Fight Revenge (1999) (a Capcom USA-developed 3D arcade/Saturn game set between Final Fight (1989) and Street Fighter Alpha 3 (1998)) Cody "was arrested by [corrupt cop and Mad Gear gang member] Edi. E for crimes that were committed by Mad Gear member Poison and the many street fights that Cody had participated in from his time."

Dee Jay was originally designed for SFII by an American designer.

The Guy saving Rose from killing herself(?) and then from being carried out of a park by M.Bison, who just hands her over(?), is pretty weird. : P

I don't vibe too well with Rolento's moves; I think I just HP whacked people with his stick, and his creepy steel cable hanging Ultra II had a pretty good hit rate.

Poison's kinda fun, especially her slappy Ultra II. Struggled to find a way to keep off that creepy stalker T.Hawk with her, but you gotta love her band--and Ryu and Ken in quasi-KISS make-up.

I'm a terrible Evil Ryu, just terrible. Darn that M.Bison.

Guile--thought this might be a disaster since I can't really do his moves, but hey, the power of the turtle--and the AI really lets him get away with it!

Can't really do Blanka's charge moves but you can just mash Punch or whatever and he electrocutes stuff and I did the best I've ever done with any character in the game 'cause I finally got a bonus match vs a secret character, which was a little mind blowing.

Zangief actually has a bunch of good costumes but he's also got the Mecha Zangief costume which is THE BEST so no need for those other ones or any other characters, really. Finally figured out after all these years that the way Capcom throws work is you can't have hit the opponent first or the throw will just whiff, which makes no actual sense, so you just gotta neutral jump in, or go from wake-up, and crank that stick around 360 or 720 and press some Punch buttons and just do that over and over. Shouldn't have worked against Hugo 'cause he could throw AND air throw me but I guess I just landed one more Ultra on him or something. Just crushed the boss though, how embarrassing for him. Really, Mecha Zangief is just too good.

Spammed Rufus' MK dive kick and EX qcf-HK, plus his Ultra II. It worked--except had to do regular jump kick instead of dive kick vs the boss. I was into his blue orc look.

With El Fuerte, just get a knock down somehow, then spam his qcf+P run into HP throw or whatever as the AI wakes up--you can kind of catch them with it before they've even finished standing up, it's ridiculous. Loop until dead. Can EX it if you need to survive a hit while getting in. Only Ryu seemed able to hit me out of his wake-up--with a regular punch, kick, or uppercut. Fortunately, could at least catch him with unblockable throw Ultra II.

Vega sucks, his moves are cheap and annoying to execute; could just spam charge down-up, P air dive slash thing against most opponents; if that failed, just crouch and stab.

"Balrog's costumes are all stereotypical gangsta stuff = P"

Can't really do Balrog's moves but EX dash punch followed by heavy low sweep worked pretty consistently and pretty much powered through. Didn't get much turtling in, in fact, although that plus low heavy sweep worked great against the boss. All of which is good 'cause I struggled with his ultras: Ultra 1 got blocked a lot (I can't combo into things properly, of course); II, a throw, can't be blocked but does, like, no damage. = P

With Fei Long I had the problem I usually have with characters who have a lot of offensively loaded special moves: I sorta randomly flowchart them instead of learning their normals and stuff properly, or, say, blocking. So I was just kind of flying all over. Fortunately his flip kick, while a slight pain to execute with that up-forward motion, has great range and speed and a pretty good hit rate, and the AI was somewhat worse at blocking his rekkas than I'd have thought. Still, I struggled and didn't really feel like I got a handle on him. Awkward angles on his kicks. Was pleasantly surprised I finally KOed the boss by accidentally executing Fei's weird toe flick special, which turned out to be a counter move sending Fei flipping past the opponent, where further flailing (side switching from NPCs had been killing me, especially vs Abel; oh yeah which reminds me, Fei's flaming kick uppercut ended up getting blocked or whiffing a lot 'cause I'm terrible) accidentally fired off his flaming uppercut kick for the final KO. Har.

Based on the crushings I'd dealt out with Zangief, I suspected T.Hawk would be easier to get through with, and boy was he; could even fall back on his silly eagle-cry dive move to get by Ryu, the one AI who knows how to uppercut neutral jump ins for 360/720 throws. Otherwise though, just jump in, throw, jump in, throw. Got hit or knocked down? Throw. EZ peasy.

Not the best crop of costume options; Fei's suit was okay I guess; nice glasses, anyway.

Maybe went a little better than I'd feared. ; ) Felt like I had to play on the defensive a lot with Rose. EX qcf-K got a lot of my hits. Her uppercut-motion-P air throw(P) seemed so mysterious I never really tried it, and I'm useless at parry/deflection type things. Didn't really push her fireball until it turned out to be just the thing for the boss, surprisingly!

Don't get her story at all, neither here nor the seemingly almost completely separate bits in Guy's playthrough!

Yang has a bit of that SF3 complication about him still and I only used the simplest of his moves, pretty much, but I guess it didn't go too badly--until the boss, where I finally had to risk my wrist on some rekkas to get enough damage output. ; )

And I was pleased to find his story proving--in my head-canon, at least--that yes Chun-Li can't stand Yun. ; D She and Yang have a nice conversation though!

I kept calling Ultras "Criticals." : P And I think I said the game was 30 GB--it's actually only 15.

Finally figured out why I have a hard time doing some throws with Hugo: he's got at least one other punch motion special, qcf-P (claps), and it's really easy to trigger than instead of his 360-P throw, at least when you're as input-sloppy as I am. Whereas Zangief for instance doesn't have any other P specials, so there's nothing to interfere! Hugo can do a lot of other stuff besides throws but it's kinda that SF3 complicated stuff that uh I'm not smart enough for.

Anyway here I guess you get to see the origin of him and Poison working together so that's something! (Because uh some other video I watched said IV takes place before 3.)
