Image viewing and converting program, upon tweaking with options its easy to use it to scroll through a directory of images, for instance, and you delete ones you don't want on the fly.
You can script it, for instance I have it set up so right-clicking an image like a TIF will give me a context menu item for converting it to PNG using a call to IrfanView in a .bat file:

When needed I further compress indexed color PNGs (from Photoshop) through https://compress-or-die.com/png ; I was looking at using webp instead, which IrfanView supports, but a) webp isn't supported by IE (now replaced by Edge of course) or old versions of other browsers, and b) while for instance an 80% compression webp of say the large version of https://smbhax.com/?e=0048&d=0027 is 268K, sharper than the 333K ~80% jpg version (that's from Photoshop's weird "6" scale; 80% from IrfanView is actually 314K), webp does lose some of the warmer, ie red tilted, purples in the image--they go gray instead. So you're losing color data and keeping maybe less noticeable--until you zoom in, where it's obvious--noise detail. So I think I'll just stick to .jpg for non-indexed color images.
tumblr converts indexed .gif to lossless indexed .webp, which is kinda neat; they're slightly smaller file size than say the compress-or-die png versions, although those are already pretty small. tumblr is now also converting animated gifs to animated .webp, which is significantly smaller.
(tumblr converts even indexed .png to .jpg, which--from indexed .png--are considerably larger files, and not as sharp. Blargh. So upload indexed color images to tumblr as .gif so the index gets preserved in lossless and smaller .webp.) |
