| | Cutesy platformer in which you play the super-deformed Son Son, a monkey man with a big stick--is he related to Gokuu from Magic Beast Warriors (entry 162) in any way? So you jump around hitting things with sticks. You'll come across your man-animal friends from time to time who tell you somethings in Japanese. You'll also find a girl who sells you powerups in a little shop interface. Looking at the manual, it appears that you eventually get items that use up your Magic Points, but I haven't found any of those yet. So I just hit things with me stick. Graphics and sound are "mint," as they say. Control is sharp although the jumping gets me a bit, because you jump higher if you just jump straight up while standing still--but then you sometimes have to use that straight jump, then nudge over the lip of a ledge, and this seems a bit wodgey. I'm probably just doing it wrong half the time, I suppose. I suck at platformers and this game is hard. Son Son can take a lot of hits but he only gets one life, although you can buy items to extend it (but these cost a lot). And there are nasty things like lava and little erratic flying ghosty things, and fiendish blobs that pop out of the jars you break looking for loot. |
