"Metal Slug 5 -- the series continues, even if it isn't quite as brilliant as 3."

Pretty good Slug outing, methinks. I was prepared for a letdown after all the poor things I heard (but have yet to see) about Metal Slug 4, but while this one doesn't feel as inspired as the last Nazca-made installment in the series, Metal Slug 3 (see entry 170), it still feels like a pretty solid adventure in the Slug line, and there are some surprisingly nice visual effects, such as pulsing lava, that the developers managed to coax out of the old MVS hardware.

I only played the first few stages and there wasn't a whole lot that hasn't been seen before in the series, although there was a neat mechanized suit you could pilot, and an amusing part where you're moving down a jungle river on a canoe rowed by a hyperactive blond and bearded hostage.
