Newish Polygon interview with SNK's Yasuyuki Oda and Eisuke Ogura about KOF, from the 90s 'til now.

Some of the questions are clunky, and they immediately punt when asked toward the end "With investment in SNK by the MiSK foundation recently, have there been any immediate changes?" Which is probably for the best. : P But there's maybe an interesting grain or two about the old SNK.

Great read. One thing that sort of bums me out though is that it sounds like some SNK employees had a hard time enjoying (what I consider to be) their peak output, like 96-2000. I guess going out of business while being overworked isn’t much fun...I just wish they knew how much I love the Neo Geo pocket and KOF 99 and all that.

Yeah, I hate it when I see a reviewer say something like "you just know they were having a blast making this game" because no, you don't know that, and there's a good chance at least some of them weren't. But they did it anyway because they really wanted to be able to make games for a living, just hoping that one day it would somehow get better.

hmm, well it's still not finished, but the answer is kind of and also not really!? ha ha. we had a very small budget and 1/3 of it got wasted on someone who couldn't actually do the work we needed. then our art/tech director at the time was talented but caustic and basically alienated half our team forever until I had to get rid of him. We released it twice, paid for by a platform both times, but always a very small amount of money that basically just barely kept us going. I'm glad we made as much of it as we did but while I do have fond memories from the time I don't think it was very fun. I've had a little fun making our current thing though.

That sounds exactly like an SNK lifer typed it. I had a lot of fun playing Oh Deer!, but its currently not on my Vita and getting it back on there is a massive PITA because it involves turning on my PS3, where my USA Vita backup exists, and remembering how to restore from there which will probably take the course of two evenings in itself. I should really do that though...now that the Vita has lived its life (maybe?) I can see that all that region switching I had to do for JP and HK imports was pointless (none of the DLC turned out to be worth anything whatsoever) so I'll leave it in USA mode now.

thanks! yeah the plan is for when you hit more deer for the subsequent mile of graphics to get more horrifying, and when you avoid more they get more "happy" - kinda. there's just no real budget for finishing it is the problem. but we poke at it when we have the chance!
