I never really looked into this. Obviously it slots into the notch on the top of the cartridge... I bet it's in the manual if I had that handy! My best guess is it's to hold the dongle on the wireless communication thingie. It's just about the right size, it looks like it's meant to hold a cylinder, seems like the thing to me. See inside:
