Posted by SignOfZeta on April 22, 2025 at 19:35:59 EST in reply to well, while we're talking about having discussions and not ignoring things, I would not use the term "collectard" but aside from that, yeah, I think people are trying to fill holes in their lives however they can. I don't really feel like making their problems my business but I did see a post the other day where a guy bought some common games, posted them to social media, and then typed out some numbers like SNES 541/762 - and I realized he was sharing how far along he was to a complete set, as though that were a normal thing to do, and that felt pretty bad to look at. (n/t) from exodus.

When someone can explain to me in an actual conversation why “collectard” turns them off I’ll be happy no matter how the conversation turns out. Until then everyone just ignores me and lets me do what I want because I’m not hurting anybody. That old suicide pact… People who can’t take any negative feedback whatsoever are also terrible at giving it. They think this is because they are “nice”, and I’m not saying they aren’t nice, but they are also getting stupider every day. A person who never reads isn’t literate. Someone who knows how to play basketball, technically, because they did it at some point but never practices sucks as basketball. Pretending that logic can exist only with “yes” answers, removed of all the negative feelings associated with “no” is suicidal idiocy. Only humans are smart enough to be this dumb. No animal works this way. A cat or a carp knows negative and positive feedback are equally critical. Giving nuclear launch codes to an egomaniac idiot and simply believing nothing bad will happen is not good. Believing EV SUVs are going to remove all our CO2 emissions sans any engineering realism is just as stupid. The paths forward are hard enough to see as it is without closing our eyes and making it all so much worse. Overall you and I can argue but we’re not stupid and we have very similar value systems in the grand scheme of things. The only real difference is I’m too scared to be self employed but not so scared I end every sentence with an upward inflection. We value humans more then money, etc, we want to do what’s right more then we want to be right about something…I think…but what hope is there of explaining to someone what a fascist salute looks like if you can’t help me move on from the term “collectard” because conversation is scary? It’s basically impossible to hurt my feelings. Go ahead. Explain yourself. It’s OK. Stating your business with confidence doesn’t mean you’re a horrible person unless your confidence is unearned.
