| | Very impressive port of the arcade game except for one thing: no background music during gameplay. Aside from some quiet ambient sounds, like faint crowd noises, all you get to listen to are the sound effects, which sound a little tinnier in this version.
I guess this is what they had to do to maintain the graphics on the PlayStation's tiny memory space and to their credit they nailed that part: I don't see slowdown or missing animations here, even the backgrounds are quite lively and colorful. I'm sure that there are slowdown and framecuts somewhere but they're well hidden. You also get a fan art gallery and a gorgeous Shinkiro gallery of 30 high resolution images. Oh, you can listen to the game music in the gallery mode, I guess that's supposed to make up for its absence during play... except it doesn't work well there, either, because the track resets each time you move to another image. Ah well.
Minor load times between character switches, of course, and a bit of a chunk after the match ending, but not bad at all for a 2D PlayStation fighter. The loss of music is a real bummer but everything else is top-notch. |
