According to Managunz when ripping, VT3 (disc) is 4.47 GB in 12 files (VT4 is 3.3 GB in 11 files. 'p')

RPCS3 can't run the dump, reporting that PS3_GAME/EBOOT.BIN is "Invalid or unsupported file format." Game runs from the disc on PS3, was able to start Exhibition match fine. There's one small scratch, right at the edge. Tried copying just EBOOT.BIN over again, three times, then the whole thing; no errors during copy, but always the same error from RPCS3. Also, Managunz kept locking up while this Blu-ray was in the drive, at seemingly random times--sometimes while browsing directories on the USB drive.

Guess I'll have to try another disc. Plunking out for a sealed copy this time. : p

Fortunately, like all the PS3 games I've bought off eBay so far, this game isn't pricey. The problematic one was "Very Good," $7.52 total. Sealed one $29.67 total.

There are a few very light other scratches on the disc whose dump wouldn't work; the short one near the edge is distinct, with grainy flecks around it. "Very Good" was a bit optimistic, considering there were old game store stickers on both sides of the case. But the price was about right. : P Still, maybe I should've taken the optimistic rating as a warning sign. And when it arrived, the disc had a multitude of very distinct, somewhat thin, frenetic smudges on the data side--dog's nose? Seller apologized. Anyhoo, it seems to run on PS3 so I can't really blame them for the dump not running. EBOOT.BIN is apparently the "exe" for PS3 games... Does seem odd that it runs from disc but not from the dump; I suppose RPCS3 could be fussier somehow. RPCS3's compat info rates it compatible and says no known issues with the game. If the sealed one doesn't run either, then maybe that's just incorrect, or it busted recently.

(Hm that got me checking RPCS3's Github issues and none show up for VT3, but found out VF4's World Tour Mode crashes, starting in versions two years ago: https://github.com/RPCS3/rpcs3/issues/12892 ; older version runs it fine. That version still won't boot this VT3 dump. ; )

(The "Very Good" condition copy, in addition to the old store stickers on both sides of the case, also had one on the spine!! 'ppp')

(Yeah I gotta pay more attention to a poorly judged rating like that when perusing auctions in the future, that seller was kind of a disaster, ah well.)

I wonder if the PS3's software does error checking and correction/retries when reading from Blu-ray, and the homebrew (Managunz) doesn't have those same routines.

Managunz does have settings pertaining to read errors...

The sealed copy still failed at first:
1) Attempt 1: a lockup while copying with Managunz (while copying I switched my screen output away from the PS3, so maybe that's why?)
2) Attempt 2: Complete re-dumped went okay, but in RPCS3 still got a failed boot with the same EBOOT.BIN error message as with the scratched disc dump from before
3) Attempt 3: I re-copied all the files EXCEPT the 4.2 GB file, and then it got through the initial boot, but ended on a black screen, with no error reported in RPCS3, and RPCS3 still running, and reporting various updating framerates--just on a black screen : P
4) Attempt 4: Did a complete re-dump--and it just worked

One of the game files is 4.2 GB, so I wonder if that was just a tough one to copy over correctly.

Sega AM3 (later called Hitmaker; they also did Sega Rally, Crazy Taxi, Virtual On) did the arcade and PS3 versions of VT3--Sumo Digital did the other ports of it. But Sumo did all the VT2009 versions--it wasn't an arcade game. BUT AM3 did all the VT4 versions.

Trying out Virtua Tennis 3 for PS3 in RPCS3 with exhibition matches on the default Normal difficulty!

I'd neglected to write it down before and it took me forever to track back down (in the manual, in the end) that it IS a two button game, even though since after the first they kept trying to pretend they were three button games (until VT4, which IS a 3 button game, if I understand this correctly): there's a dedicated Top Spin button (fast, attacking shot) and a dedicated Slice button (slow, defensive shot), and hitting them both together does Lob--so don't hit that dedicated Lob button, it's a dirty waste of buttoning! ; P

The manual says Drop Shot is done by pressing I guess it's basically the direction away from the net and Slice, but so far I've only got that to do a like half-drop shot, once.

Probably got something to do with how long you're holding the directional input prior to hitting the button? 'Cause that ended up being how you can indeed put a whole lot of direction on serves, for instance. It's tricky!

The like sideways backpedaling jog animation looks kinda silly.

Pretty darn fun so far! This is the only one that was 1080p on US PS3--and Sega AM3 aka Hitmaker handled the port themselves, whereas their console workhorse back then, UK studio Sumo Digital, handled the other VT3 ports--and all of the next one, Virtua Tennis 2009, which was not an arcade game...and only ran in 720p on PS3 (1080p on 360! 'p'). And then AM3 came back and did all of the next one, VT4, which was an arcade game, too--but oddly was--if the case-backs are any indication--1080p on PS3 in PAL releases, but only up to 1080i in the US/Canada PS3 release!

But that's getting ahead of things. Still gotta check out World Tour and stuff in VT3!

(After recording, I found I had my Output Scaling method set wrong in RPCS3 for this game--to "Nearest" instead of the default "FidelityFX Super Resolution; once I set it to FidelityFX, the occasional framerate stuttering I'd been seeing in this game went away! So it'll play smoother next time. : D)

There's no auto-save in World Tour mode! = ooo

Giant tennis bowling is way more fun than regular bowling. ^ _^

Finally worked out how to do a drop shot! Gotta start holding down on d-pad and Slice almost as soon as ball is hit at you.

RPCS3 confusing calls your setting for the PS3's base emulated resolution "Default resolution"; "Base resolution" would probably be a better name.

I get occasional framerate hiccups running Virtua Tennis 3 at its max base res of 1080p in RPCS3; they don't particularly correspond to apparent game activity, really--they don't feel like rendering segments that are particularly challenging my computer. So I think they're more to do with (emulated) internal PS3 stuff, I dunno.

Anyway, busting VT3 down to the "recommended" RPCS3 base res of 720p--while still having RPCS3 render it out at 1080p--seems to solve that emulated hitching (whereas staying in 1080p but turning off AA and setting Shader Quality to the minimum "Low" setting had done nothing to help it); I can even raise "Shader Quality" from the I think default "High" to "Ultra" without seeing a negative impact on performance...although I can't really tell what it does. ; D

And actually I was wrong--comparing screenshots, the in-game 2D UI overlay, at least, is not any fuzzier at 720p base res setting than it was at the 1080p base res setting; I suppose the game still uses 720p UI assets even at 1080p.
