2D wide-screen (non-tate) vertical shooter with some 3D bits and effects. This game has received gushing fan reviews on the internet and really I just don't get it. It looks good, I guess, in a chunky rotated/scaled-sprite way, but the actual flying and shooting hardly seems inspired--I can't really put my finger on anything specific about it, but maybe that's just the problem.

Except I guess for this "lock-on" feature where you hold the fire button and this big wireframe sort of net thing extends out to cover most of the screen, then when you release the button any ships that were in the field get zapped by a guided laser shot. But the net is slow (and different-shaped for each of the five or so playable ships, whee!) and the guided lasers don't seem to do all that much damage, so it seemed much more effective simply to hold the auto-fire button and sweep back and forth across the screen.

Oh wait as I think about it, another specific emerges: bosses and certain badguys in the levels completely blindside you with an instant death beam from time to time--guess what, that's not fun! All this mediocrity comes served up with really bad, frequent slowdown, worsened when you're locking a bunch of targets in a bit net (another reason to avoid using that). I haven't been able to see the attraction here.
