| | Aka "Air Zonk" in the States, this is one of the games that inspired me to get a PCE in the first place. Hudson and Red take the super-spritey PC Genjin style and turn it in to a horizontal shooter that is nothing short of brilliant! It's explosive sprite overload to the max and sure there's a bit of slowdown here and there but man, this is one wild ride. You can pick from a wide variety of cyborg sidekicks to shoot alongside you and, if you get the sidekick summon powerup again while the sidekick is present, the two of you merge in to one big old super-cyborg that pretty much stomps everything in its path, even the screen-filling cartoon bosses. This game is, by the way, much more enjoyable than the later "CD Denjin" (see entry 485), which recycles the Bonk-as-shooter idea but without any real energy to go with it. Punkic Cyborg, on the other hand, bristles with good vibes, from the peace sign that PC throws out at the beginning of a stage to the amazing power bomb he drops if you hold down the charge shot button long enough. Oh yeah, and he can pick up some pretty cool handguns too (way better than the sushi-flinging costume change in CD Denjin). If you have a PCE, you should also have this game. Super stuff. |
