| A top-down action dungeon crawl, sorta like the old Gauntlet games, except that the monsters don't spawn endlessly from generators, the emphasis seems to be on ranged rather than melee combat (though I was the archer chick, so my view may be warped), and the levels are all laid out diagonally. The game is rather dull graphically, and the diagonal layout thing just seems annoying, since it's a little more effort to run diagonally than it is up/down/left/right on the d-pad. In one curious twist, the archer's arrows rebound off the diagonal walls, so you can sort of shoot around corners--and the monsters are dumb enough to stand there and take it for a while, too. Arcus Odyssey didn't seem like a downright bad game, but it also wasn't overly impressive, though co-op games always seem a little more appealing when you have a friend along. I could have played this one a bit longer, but my friend gave it a big thumb's down, and we moved on. |
