I thought about getting one of these at one point, but then I realized realistically if I've got something to dump I'm giving it to Frank, and I don't need to have one on hand. they're neat though, that's for sure!

There's been backup devices for all these systems since when they were new. A company called Bung made the one for the NGPC and I'm pretty that's what everyone who ever dumped games used. That Bung linker does use a parallel port connection, so I guess that'd make it more complicated than one of these for a lot of people.

Ah yeah the Pocket Linker. Too bad about the parallel port requirement! I wonder if there's any chance it would work via a USB-Parallel adapter. I think when I searched for an NGPC ROM dumper years ago I didn't know what terms to use and all I came up with was a breadboard kit thing, maybe like the one in the video inside. Also I think I got a video of Flavor talking about his stuff.

I'd say that anyone who messes with stuff like this probably ought to just get an old computer to do it with instead of trying to make it work with a modern computer. I keep an old X series Thinkpad that I rescued from an e-waste bin to use in these cases. It's got all the old ports on a docking station and I have MS-DOS, Win98Se, XP, a few versions of Linux, and some other OSes all on a GRUB menu. Actually, it's a pretty nice little computer and I often end up using it as my main computer.

Yes. Absolutely. A working period PC makes a lot of things easier. A few years ago I acquired a PhotoCD (Kodak’s thing…) and wanted to view it and holy shit, it’s way hard if not impossible on new stuff since the drives themselves aren’t compatible. On my PowerPC Mac Mini from 2004 though…no problem. BTW: PhotoCDs aren’t super high quality. Another example would be making direct copies of games for PCE CD, Neo CD, Mega CD, 3DO, etc is absolute cake (“copy this CD”) whereas new drives and new OS make it several more steps since they can tell those aren’t audio CDs and won’t pretend they are.

EXACTLY! I don’t get why so many kids want to dump their own games... well I guess I understand that…but I don’t get why they think they ever will. At this point it’s *super* hard to even think of something that hasn’t been dumped let alone actually find it. And if I did run across something then some maniac like Billy Pitt would do a better job of actually archiving it so I’d just give it to him.

I need to borrow something like that or go over someone’s place that has something like that because I have a rare promotional cartridge from blockbuster that needs to be dumped, and I have not yet seen a dump for it. It’s the judge dread Promotional itself.

It’s a one level demo I don’t think it was a C in the game it’s timed and it shows the score of the end. If I remember right, it’s like a two minute demo and you fight a boss if you get to them fast enough.

That was a surprisingly decent game that I never would have played except that I worked at a rental store at the time. Not as good as Hagane but much better than Turrican…if my nearly 30 year old memories are correct.

you could send it to frank at the video game history foundation, he'd send it back after! Or you can get one of these dumping tools and do it yourself - but if you wanna get more attention on it you could coordinate with frank anyway for a release plan.
