how often do you all still check the board(s)? I used to do it once per day even as recently as 5 years ago. then went down to once per week. now probably once every two weeks roughly? It's amazing that the place is still going at all, but just curious who else is lurking and waiting for something to react to, or even just checking to make sure it's still here.

If at that but I'll see enough kotakus at the top 20 in debt nations.

For a while, it was muscle memory that kept me coming here. With the way predictive search and browser start pages have changed, that doesn't happen as often. What's kind of crazy is I'll occasionally find myself typing out URLs that were part of my mid-90's browsing routine. Sometimes at work I'll click into the URL bar and instinctively begin typing out the address of some import shop before I can think of what I'm actually doing.

yeah, I think a lot of my visits here across the years have been that - just sit down to the computer and type "pale~" and then it auto completes. I used to type out insertcredit.com every day and then go to the forums but I just have a constantly open tab for that now, ha ha. Incidentally I found the old website for Beaman co. in Fremont - not sure if you ever went there as a youth, but I sure did!

Oh, wow! I loved that place, the owners were so nice. It seemed like they were always getting new stuff, or had something on the way. Or it was a scheme to trick kids into coming back every week. I'd always leave with a new Dragon Ball figure and instructions on when to come back for the next one. I totally forgot they had a website, that's nuts. I can vividly remember browsing it and calling them. Another 90's Japanimation flashback: I noticed Kimono My House is on instagram and seems to exist in basically the same capacity as ever. Apparently it's a woman? I'm surprised/not surprised. I'd be even less surprised if she did voice work in the 80's.

Yep, still visit probably once a month or so. And just realized that NCSX is still going. Haven't visited that site in maybe a decade I think... For some reason SNGP and NCSX always get paired up in my head. I remember posting a pretty detailed report here of the (semi-large) SFIV tournament I entered years ago where I got runner-up. I'd love to read that again, but that's the beauty and curse of this place, heh.

NCS is selling NOS games for strange prices and giving advice about VGA grading. They’ll have a thing that says, “SALE! [SOME OLD GBA GAME GAIDEN] - $78.84” and you’ll find yourself wondering why this mid tier game they have cases of is supposed to be a deal at %50 over retail and what price it’s supposedly marked down from.

I just logged in to see if I could read what you sent, and it seems that they delete inactive email inboxes after a year of inactivity. Wtf! I used that email address a LOT back in the day, and everything's just gone now? Fuck that really sucks. Well you can use my Gmail account now... bean the gene at gmail. Speaking of Hameln, I binge watched it right before COVID hit, and then found a great article that captured a lot of my thoughts about the show... so much so that I emailed the author to compliment what he wrote. Yeah, he’s a fan and makes a lot of good points. I think even he overdoes the “there’s so little animation” angle though. That honestly never bothered me. They did it a LOT in those old Tatsunoku shows and they looked great. They just did it more in Hamlin. I wonder if any Japanese fan complains about lack of anime in anime when they still have FM radio dramas based on manga. If the animation isn’t impressive enough your system clearly isn’t loud enough because you shouldn’t be even noticing it!

He makes a pretty good case for the TV show. “People” do seem to prefer the (then nauseatingly popular) slapstick fantasy vibe but man at this point would people even remember with Fortune Quest and Slayers and everything else? I think this “failure” is probably more fondly remembered by its few fans than a manga-authentic version would have been 30 years later. The way it was made it stands out.

Btw, my question was “Does the last LD actually exist?” At the time I knew the catalog number but couldn’t find an actual picture of it. I thought it would be so fitting if the final LD got cancelled but I recently did find proof that it was made…if only I could find the actual thing. I have the Movie and all other volumes. It’s a very weird release in that it has five (5) episodes on it which means it was an expensive two disc release…late in the life of a flop show. It getting cancelled would have done wonders for my persecuted fan complex but I guess I just need to go shopping.

I remember looking often at the Hameln LDs back in the day, and thinking that there was something odd about how they were sold, but I was pretty sure all of the 25 episodes were on there. During my 2020 rewatch, I remember trying to find the official, legit DVD set of it online, but I was so confused and unsure that what I was going to buy was a knock-off, so I just gave up.

The only kind-of related thing I heard back in the day, was that one of the middle episodes during its original run was pre-empted by a big news event, and then never re-aired. They just kept playing the following Hameln episodes without going back to re-show the missed episode. I think this was relayed to me by Leon back in the day when he couldn't find the bootleg tape of that episode in Chinatown... but who knows. If it's actually true, it's certainly a hilarious addition to how disrespected the show was.

Also, talking about this makes me want to re-watch Giant Robo now.

Yeah, I eventually learned that all the episodes are on LDs. The sequencing is less than ideal though for the publisher and the fan buying the last volume because it’s a five episode two disc collection. Typically TV anime is a half hour and a CLV LD is two hours so they sell four episodes on a disc or perhaps eight episodes on two discs. So this needed one last disc to get the last episode on which raised the price by like 1500 yen. It seems like they could have avoided that with better planning. I have a fair number of TV series on LD at this point and none of them were sequenced that oddly.

Robo just rules. That show never gets old or goes bad. The ending, it’s actual plot, not the plot it seems to have when it starts out, is so great it spoils me for lesser works. While grand in scale we sometimes all feel like Franken Von Folger…like we’re the only one on earth that isn’t crazy. When you’re the only one not buying an electric car, for example, and people who apparently never heard of the famously failed and ecologically calamitous pushes for E85 and diesel…people who literally confuse ignorance with insight…outnumber logically or historically minded people. It can make you want crawl into a hole and not come out again until you have an invention that can save the whole world at once.

Once or twice a month. I do most of my reading on my phone these days, and this site (like most sites) never really made the transition to mobile in my mind, so it's only when I sit down at the desktop computer for entertainment purposes, which isn't as frequently as I would like to think. But I'm thinking of this site and the games you all introduced me to all the time :)
