Correction, now I'm confused. I have a Nano that doesn't work with iTunes anymore either and that one is from about 2008 or so, I think. Lame. Super lame. This is a dandy little device too. A very nice color screen and the trusty click wheel in a tiny size, %100 functional. Now a paperweight...or is it? Looking around online I can't seem to find confirmation that *any* iPod has been discontinued. Even the FireWire-only original from 2001 can be made to work with iTunes 12, supposedly. However when I plug them in nothing happens. I'll have to look into this more but for now it seems I was selling Apple short on this issue.
