I wonder what the reasonable market is for a wonderswan game today. probably higher than it was 10 years ago!

Indeed. They could sell 500 copies easily. Maybe even 2000. At some point in Japan the WS was indeed popular, although probably only for one summer. The main problem everyone has ever had with the WS, or really the WS Color era specifically, is not enough action games. This solves that problem and anyone of any language or region can play it. Its also pretty close to a tech demo in flashiness.

yeah... it's weird that they didn't make many action games! Like if they'd had closer to 50% action games maybe the thing would've come out in the US :P loads of RPGs and visual novels though! expensive to translate! wee

They kinda did at first. Pocket Fighter, Makaimura, Beatmania, Crazy Climber, Densha de Go!, Klonoa, Turntablist, Rockman and Forte, Magical Drop, Puzzle Bobble. All of those are b/w though. Once it went color most of the devs were gone and everything was menu based...presumably because the with cookie cutter code and some corporate assets making tons of RPGs is a lot easier than making tons of Pocket Fighters. The similarity to PCE is hard to ignore but at least PCE had seemingly endless oddball devs that made stuff forever. I really like Bandai (I have two Crystals) and even I have few reasons to play this system.

And with the PCE CD a lot of devs did go back to action, too. But yeah... there were fewer action games as the platform went on. I do like the thing, and there are some legitimately good RPGs on there, but there aren't the most reasons to pull it out. If they'd done more with the wonderwitch earlier on they might have had something interesting, considering judgment silversword and dicing knight came out of that experiment!
