Posted by SignOfZeta on February 07, 2021 at 00:13:34 EST in reply to Oh, ah yeah it says that on its Wikipedia page too: "The game was first revealed in Tokyo Game Show 2003, originally planned to be developed on the Atomiswave hardware before settling on the Neo-Geo MVS hardware." And I managed to find a 2003 GameSpot article about it. Now I wonder why they switched to the MVS. from Paleface.

My guess is that their research said that Atomiswave customers were a much smaller base at that point and they decided to wait another year for the main series and poop out that garbage Neo Wave to get their feet wet...and perhaps AES factored into that also, maybe not. “One more KOF on the Neo!” was exciting at the time. It would have only gotten them an extra fifty grand or so, but fifty grand is fifty grand when you’re SNK. :) I’m glad they did because I have come close to getting a Atomiswave a few times but never have and while 2003 isn’t my favorite KOF I do like it a lot. It’s also cool that there are 10 KOFs on Neo.
