And although none of them worked very well compared to today, they didn't have today’s issue which is that every search is considered a product search so no matter what you type in the first three pages are either stuff for sale or squatting pages trying to steer you towards stuff for sale. Also, most of the people you talked to online had read a book recently because they were pretty much all in school. It’s not our imagination that the internet is stupider now. It absolutely is. I wasn't quite that tuned in to the web that early--the "had read a book recently" part, anyway. But good point about the product search, yeah AltaVista was pretty clean I think, although I could be remembering that wrong.
