Last post got me thinking: With many years of hindsight, how would you rank the NGP fighters? My ranking contained within.
1. Gals Fighters (fast gameplay, interesting mechanics, and backgrounds/music that are original to the game)
2. MOTM (the most content and the crossover element still feels exciting and well done)
3. Last Blade (also a fair bit of content with a deep system)
4. Samurai Shodown 1!/2!
5. Fatal Fury: FC (I tend to think this one is a little underrated. I love the soundtrack and the large backgrounds. The combos are also fun, although the game is a bit sluggish)
6. KOF R-1/R-2 (Not bad, but somehow the selection of characters and backgrounds never did as much for me as the other fighters)
Follow Ups:
MOTM, R2, R1, Gals. Or something--anyway MotM way in front! (n/t) (Paleface) (17:29:13 06/18/22 EST)
In order: Gals Fighters plays smoothest of them all and has the most unique mechanics. MotM is the most allround of them and the crossover aspect is really well done. Last Blade has good atmosphere and also has interesting mechanics. KoF R1/R2 play decent enough and play just different enough compared to MotM to still be fun on their own. Samurai Shodown! and its sequel are fun enough, though kinda basic. Fatal Fury just feels too sluggish to play, even back in the day :/ (n/t) (Rockman Pocket) (13:10:50 06/21/22 EST)
I think my list is about what it would've been then, too: 1) MOTM (I love the extras, it just feels generous) 2) Gals Fighters (pacing, goofiness) 3) KOF R1/2 - (I like it! but I always like "weird KOF" and this certainly is it), 4) Fatal Fury FC (it's barebones, but it works for me and feels very deliberate), 5) Last Blade (great to look at, really impressive, but the series just doesn't so it for me) 6) Samurai Shodowns (kind of as above) (n/t) (exodus) (18:03:46 06/27/22 EST)
I have to put Gals Fighters on top because it’s the most refined and perfected version of what they were doing, even though it’s pretty bare bones compared to other games. Match of the Millennium is second, and only just, because it’s huge and has everything and a bunch extras, peak SNK, IMO. Third is a tie for both KOFs, these are very well done games, perfectly shrunk versions of 97 and 98. Fourth is Last Blade…even though it’s just as much of a game as MotM, maybe more, I’m not as much invested, personally. It is fantastic though as a one player game. Last would be the Samshows because I don’t really care for the main SS series at that point and I don’t think the ports are any good compared to any of the other games. I don’t have Fatal Fury and haven’t played it in a very long time but I think I’d probably rate it above the SS games but nothing else even though Real Bout 2 is one of my favorite games. It just didn’t survive the process, IMO. (n/t) (SignOfZeta) (08:00:24 06/29/22 EST)
They're okay. (n/t) (Kafkaesque and Opa Opa) (14:47:28 07/19/22 EST)
