| A decidedly offbeat rhythm game in which you steer one of a number of odd characters across the surface of a square pond, trying to get to the center of expanding circles and push the action button before their beat ends. Circles touching each other will combo, and a super move will help you get through tight spots. I wasn't really able to get into this one. Maybe the sound wasn't turned up high enough on the stereo where I played and watched it, but it was hard to see how the action really corresponded to the music being played. The music, for that matter, seemed somewhat sketchy itself. About half of it claimed to be remixes of Namco game music--stuff like Sky Kid (argh), Rolling Thunder, and Ridge Racer--but it was difficult to hear the original inspiration in many of them, and once that you could recognize just weren't really the toe-tappable anyway. And regardless, the beats on the expanding circles you're chasing on the pond are distributed seemingly at random for the most part. You can play two-player. We played what it called "co-op," but since it flashes the name of the player who gets the most points in a stage, and since you can in effect steal beats from each other, I'm not sure how that really adds up to being "cooperative." The rippling surface of the pond and the effects of the bursting bubble beats are pretty, but the gameplay did not make me anxious to go back for more. |
