| | | Trying Elden Ring on PC in Steam's two-hour return window! It's prettier and runs better than Dark Souls: Remastered, but the interface is still surprisingly clunky, I'm still not particularly enjoying the combat, and I'm still not finding the basic game loop compelling; and now there's berry picking and other conventional open world stuff on top of that. I toggled the Blood option off. If going more modern in the series has been less compelling for me, I wonder if I went more ancient... |

| | | I'm assured by LaurelSoup that "most of that ingredient gathering stuff you can totally ignore." https://selectbutton.net/t/games-you-played-today-viii-journey-of-the-cursed-poster/14130/1216 And I am getting weird urges to re-purchase this (I hurried through so I could refund it on Steam if I wasn't liking it, but the hurrying probably didn't help the liking) and play it in a super-chillout sort of way. = oo There was also some speedrun I was watching--probably on Twitch? darned if I can find it now--by a guy who estimated when asked by the presenter that he had maybe 2000 hours in the game and of course he was just running past everything to hit certain bosses for certain things; he got backstabbed and killed by one minion he tried to skip by at the base of a ladder though ^ _^; oh and he got one apparently unfortunate random twin boss who smushed him after a bit, and this was all somehow really endearing. I kind of am not keen on all the traversal...but then whence these urges to chill out and wander? Oh NO. Well I should probably just re-buy it and stop feeling guilty about having refunded this game I am now feeling unwonted urges for. But I should play Demon's first! And III, which I went ahead and bought for some reason in the last day of the sale! (Skipping II; my excuse for bypassing DS:R and II is that the lighting is all washed out in meshy areas in them, har. I suppose if I love all the others I could always go back to them someday right right.) |
|
|
| | | | I played this before I understood--from DeS' clear hints--that blocking requires Stamina, so that didn't help. And I was in such a rush that I intentionally skipped the "Cave of Knowledge" or whatever at the start, and had no clue about anything like how to level up. : PPP |

| | | | Repurchased in Steam Winter Sale now that Demon's Souls has got me into the series. |
|
|
| | | | Autodetect settings put them on "High"--but also didn't want to stay on Windowed Borderless. : P Turned off autoconfig, set to borderless, set to Maximum ; D, found the game's SSAO doesn't like my video card--dark flickering of whole surfaces--so I turned that off, otherwise, gets 60 fps idling outside in a rainstorm, so hey, guess we're all set. ; ) |

| | | Making a character and starting Elden Ring! And getting bent out of shape over how the game hides the level up option until you happen to sync 4 waypoints ("Sites of Grace"--not quite as cool as Souls bonfires ; D)--not that it tells you that will happen so for me as a newb it's just "I can't level up, how do I level up????" which seems like a pretty key thing the tutorial just doesn't cover. 2:33 - Options 5:29 - Character Creation 47:09 - Oh! Base Template faces! 57:59 - Intro 1:02:00 - Tutorial 1:09:42 - Grafted Scion 1:15:37 - Cave of Knowledge 1:29:11 - Soldier of Godrick 2:05:16 - Groveside Cave 2:12:40 - Beastman of Farum Azula 2:32:05 - Gatefront Ruins 2:33:52 - Melina (can finally level up!) 2:52:45 - witch Renna 3:11:27 - Boc the Seamster The pure black skin color didn't have the sort of sparkly quality it has in Dark Souls III so I went with the She-Hulk look instead, that's how original I am! = D Took me a while to realize each character "class" also has a set facial type that's unique to it, ie you couldn't just change from one to the other with the detail sliders! OH. So that's why I was stuck with the massive nasal ridge going Warrior...probably in DS3 too. = oo Much happier with "Truth-Seeker's" facial type--which I was too chicken to try tweaking with the fun-house-mirror sliders ; D--yay! I was getting a bit of a nauseous feeling after a while--aside from my bad play ; D I think it was something with the camera; for next time I've turned off the "Camera Auto Rotation" and "Cinematic Effects" Camera Options, and changed "Camera Speed" to 7; the manual camera movement isn't as sharp as in the Souls games, but hopefully that'll be enough to stave off nausea. ^ _^ ("Camera Auto Rotation" gradually turns the camera as you run left or right, so you can make big curving paths along the landscape without having to move the camera manually with the right-analog stick; convenient for overland trekking, especially since it frees your right thumb to use the Run button, but it means the camera is constantly moving itself around and I think that was messing with my sense of balance. 8P) (The copious wind-tossed foliage might also be contributing but we'll see. ^ D^) |

| | | Going in quest of a longbow, then heading toward where I hear there be zweihanders... 2:40 - heading north 7:25 - how about east 22:22 - invaded! 29:14 - Melina 30:20 - Roundtable Hold 39:55 - Camera Auto Wall Recovery 41:05 - Twin Maiden Husks 51:35 - clearing the encampment 1:06:31 - Lordsworn's Greatsword 1:31:40 - Night's Cavalry 1:56:40 - crab jumping You have to get Melina to teleport you to the secret meeting place--Roundtable Hold--where there's some kind of scam to make money off you being yet another chosen one, and also a couple adorable very dead women who will sell you the longbow and also that thing that says it'll summon a defender when you get invaded--still a bit unclear on whether I'll have to keep reactivating that. To get Melina to teleport you there--after that you can fast-travel there yourself--you have to find a waypoint outdoors in an area that is NOT the starting area--Limgrave--or the peninsular area SE of the starting area; I tried going north but there were like skydiving wolves and big cliffs and gorges, so I found myself pushed into this gruesome red desert to the east, where I promptly got invaded. ; D Hm gotta look up rules on invasion, too... Couldn't toggle back to two-handed while in Roundtable Hold, once I had Barnacle Smith (not his name) upgrade my club. That was weird. There seem to be a lot of at least visual references here to that TV show the expensive fantasy writer whose name they stuck on this game also had his name stuck on... ; P You can loot chests that are kinda hidden on the backs of those huge dark wood wagons! Got a greatsword off'a the one at the north end of the guard encampment; it's not great--not even sure it beats the plus-2 club, really; its uh whatever weapon arts are called now isn't nearly as good but eh well we'll see, I guess it did okay in repeated jumping attacks on that giant crab at the end. ^ _^ Turning "Camera Auto Rotation" off definitely helped with the nausea I'd been feeling in the previous episode; and midway through this episode, found that turning off "Camera Auto Wall Recovery" prevented the camera from rotating off walls in narrow corridors, which was also a bit disorienting. I like Camera Speed 7--the default is 5--for camera rotation speed--it kinda compensates for the darn slow-in, slow-out motion of Elden Ring's camera--but it might make the bow's free aim (LB) a bit too touchy--aiming is fast, though! Maybe I can get used to it. So there's an extra-tough horseman with a huge ax on that one bridge south of the guard encampment, but only at night; by the time I got back it was just the regular horseman. Oh you don't have to hold the Run button while on horseback, just press it once and the horse shifts into high gear. : ) Hm I watched a video that said if you kill those little ball-rolling beetles ("scarabs"), you get handy rewards and stuff, so I guess I should. |

| | | Tweaking the free / manual / zoomed / down-sights / L1 / LB / whatever you call it aiming speed of the bow--longbow in this case--for a game controller 2:17 - Steam Input 5:04 - in practice 6:27 - note on guarding Coming from FromSoftware's earlier Souls games, the way the camera moves faster while free-aiming the bow with L1--aka LB, but I'm on a DualSense so ; )--in Elden Ring was really throwing me. Fortunately, since I'm playing the Steam version of the game, it was easy to tweak the aiming speed using Steam Input: - go to the Steam Library page for Elden Ring - click the little controller icon in the upper-ish right side of the library page - click the "Edit Layout" button in the Steam Input window that appears - click "Joysticks" - click the drop-down menu for "RIGHT JOYSTICK BEHAVIOR" and select "Create a Mode Shift" - click the Gear icon for the newly-appeared "RIGHT JOYSTICK (MODE SHIFT)" - click "Select Mode Shift Button(s)" and choose L1 (LB), then click off to the side of that selection window to accept and close the selection window - move the "Horizontal Scale" and "Vertical Scale" sliders until the aiming speed feels good Somewhere around 64 for both is feeling like a decent starting spot for me. It may cause funky feeling when using L1/LB for something else in the game, such as Guarding. (I don't Guard because I'm a neanderthal. ^ _^) If you ever want to remove the Mode Shift, set its drop-down menu to "None"--this will deactivate it, but the settings you made in it will be restored--at least they were for me on the same computer after a few minutes ^ _^--if you bring it back later by choosing "Create a Mode Shift" from the "RIGHT JOYSTICK BEHAVIOR" drop-down again. |

Talisman Pouch thingy I got from beating Margit gives another slot. Gotta use that. Got ideas from some videos for jumping over rather than rolling past some attacks--like maybe the huge axe of that night-time mounted bridge guard south of the guard encampment? Also jumping or even crouching might help to cancel buffered moves, which generally seems a lot harder in ER than it was in say DS3--via rolling or 1/2-hand-swapping, anyway. At least I figured out I can switch between bow and 2-hander by holding Triangle (aka "Y") and double-tapping L1 or R1. Not great and I keep fumbling it in duress but I think I'll get there... Having used Steam Input to lower bow aim speed (a right analog Mode Shift via L1) to 64% is working nicely so far. Wait videos are telling me Ashes of War are freely swappable?! Oh. The game does a terrible job of making that clear, if it is indeed the case. I'll have to try that out...on a backup weapon... Haven't tried the Zweihander's jumping/running/crouching attacks. Google is telling me that you can only have one spirit ashes summon at a time (and you maybe have to rest between anyway?) and 2 co-op player summons--well, usually only two co-op summons total I think, be they spirits, NPCs, or players--except that there are apparently very rare circumstances or boss fights in which three allies (players, or 2 NPC & 1 spirit...) can occur--and then there can also be one more player, an invader--or one ally player and one invader who also summons an ally, or something. 'p' Also I gotta use that Golden Seed she gave me to power up my Flask. Ah, the Grafted Scion butcher thing with all the arms WAS the thing that one-shot me in the tutorial. ; D And with a bit more peeking at the Fextralife wiki, yeah it looks like I got just about everything on the upper Stormveil rooftops, so don't have to worry about that area anymore. Liking the look of Commoner's Headband (Altered), this might just have been the best possible "helmet" I could have found. ^ _^ |

Hm okay a couple things I gotta do that I learned from the fextralife wiki afterwards: - the big "Omen" guy in the main castle courtyard can't crack that statue open--you gotta lead the troll all the way in there to whack it - from the site of grace next to the birds, there's apparently a spot you can drop down to from outside the wall, at that part where the wall juts out--and some stuff down there |

Hm I might take a quick poke at Fallingstar Beast without a summon--the summon may have been causing it to do its AOE attacks more; comments on the fextralife wiki make it sound like if you go up close with plain hand-to-hand it could be more of a straightforward fight; I'm still bad at that so probably won't work until I'm like way higher level, but maybe worth a shot just to see. -- Well okay it was probably just one comment saying that and it'll almost certainly just get me murdered even faster. ; D |

I think I'll take a shot at that Altus field boss; maybe I can upgrade my weapons finally if I can take them out. : P That impossible 2024 "Saxo" by Franarchy music track copyright claim by "The Orchard Music on behalf of REAL LIVE" struck for the third time, this time on 10 (!!) segments of the video, most about 10 seconds long--three were bigger: one about 50 seconds, another about 3 minutes, and one ~6 min--so there are little jumps throughout the video. The claim appears to be on the generic Caelid--or wherever--dungeon exploration music. ; P |

Oops! ; D Silly me. 'p' Fextralife wiki says there's a breakable statue north of Sellia Crystal Tunnel in Caelid w/ three Smithing Stone 5s in it; you gotta get a nearby dragon to smash the statue open. I'll have to try that. Altus Plateau and the city east of it look neat after the muddle of Caelid. ; P It isn't very clear from the wiki--or the game--but I guess I have to beat the big boss in Redmane before I can get into the top of the Divine Tower of Caelid? Blargh. They could'a let you in and then said you don't have the item to activate here or whatever. The bottom of the tower was kind of interesting, at least, and I actually kind of enjoyed that boss fight. And heck the fight against the Beastmen in Dragonbarrow was pretty fun, too. Dang those guys hit hard. ... Even cheesing that darn cave bear at the start of that cave was sort of interesting, although I didn't quite figure out how it sometimes one-shot me but other times didn't. And I don't think those poison arrows confused it...but something was definitely different about the AI the last time I went at it, where it was then hanging back instead of trying to rush at me. And how did I miss that opening to the right in the cavern where you first encounter it? Man. Seem to have hit the point where I have to armor/talisman up to survive certain encounters; that happened in Dark Souls 3, too--although that game overall felt harder, but then again I'm probably still in the early game (!!) here in Elden Ring. ; D So: will I hit the point I hit in DS3, where I'll absolutely need co-op help to beat certain bosses? Co-op is really fun of course, but when it becomes required, that's a drag that puts me off replaying...although I suppose since this game is about 3x more active, it won't be as hard to find help when needed--but it does become a consideration that could put me off replaying; it's definitely put me off wanting to replay DS3, anyway. Would it be better if you didn't need to activate a consumable item in order to see co-op summon signs? I'm so ridiculously dependent in Engvall (drat these names) to survive against bosses already. ; D It's definitely what I wanted for previous Souls games--a robot co-op buddy--although I wish he wouldn't vanish all the time...which I suppose is what makes the delicate balance feel a bit terrifying...which I suppose is what Miyazaki always wants, ie the player on edge. Dang that guy. ; D I hope he keeps having fun making these player torture chambers for a long time to come, 'cause what else would I do with myself? (Play a lot of Angband, I suppose? I've never got real far in that roguelike and have no idea if it gets boring after x playthroughs. ; ))) |

They're sure building those tough these days. 8 P There was an NPC invasion by Recusant Bernahl in there, according to fextralife wiki, except I haven't done the uh volcanic whatever stage yet to advance some questline or other, so it didn't happen. Maliketh was too fast and too low-surface-area for the Lion Greatbow, turns out. ; D Rune Arc's HP boost sure helped vs his DOT damage, which could add up fast. |

| | | 0:00 - Leyndell, Ashen Capital 10:41 - Boc the Seamster 1:10:45 - Crimson Amber Medallion plus 2 1:16:10 - Sir Gideon Ofnir, the All-Knowing 1:48:47 - Erdtree's Favor plus 2 2:06:27 - Kenneth Haight 2:14:30 - Nepheli Loux I'd failed to distinguish "Leyndell, Royal Capital"--which I played through some time back--from "Leyndell, Capital of Ash" in the fextralife wiki game progress route guide, so I was confused about where the game's endgame actually WAS ; D. And somehow I'd failed to find it elsewhere by googling--probably everyone else just took it for granted that it was obvious. ; DD I wanted to know so I could be sure NOT to stumble into it accidentally, because I want to do the DLC first, and make sure I have a chance to try to tie up other loose ends. So as everyone else probably knows, the endgame IS in Leyndell, Ashen Capital (that's a different version of Leyndell, Royal Capital, that appears after a certain plot point--you'll know because the game teleports you there to make sure you don't miss it. ; D), which for some reason fextralife calls "Capital of Ash" in their route guide. Ashen Capital is basically a big ash dune with a few treasures scattered around a doorway into a series of end game boss battles. I did the first battle--which is quite easy--but I'm going to leave the rest--which you might have to do back-to-back? not sure--until after I do the DLC and everything else. Cute misdirection with NPC Haight: you meet him early in the game and he seems like an obvious lying jerk, so I didn't want to work for him, so never progressed his quest--but in the game's usual completely unintuitive way, his quest gated my best girl Nepheli Loux's quest, so her quest never progressed and I hadn't been able to figure out why. ; D At least it's a pleasant twist to a quest (Haight's), for once, rather than the usual depressing type--so really caught me by surprise. ; )) Similar to the imaginary twist I was fantasizing about for Boc, actually. Oh yeah I should check up on Boc's quest. And supposedly Sellen's quest can be advanced in Gelmir, which is where I've been planning to go next. Eh maybe I should take another stab at those three Limgrave field bosses some time here, too. ; D |

Except where I was getting owned by a giant electric sheep (they don't seem to be in the fextralife wiki under any name I can find). But that wasn't really very fun either because they were just too fast and precise for the camera to keep up with. But then it gets even worse in a way because it turns out to beat 'um you just stand on a little cliff and they roll into the cliff and just roll against it, stuck, while you fill 'em with arrows. And some troll things got stuck in little trees next to an even smaller little cliff. And a maggot-faced man gave me a "map" of three crosses on a napkin. |
