For sure shit's crazy expensive if you want the privilege of actually owning physical media now. It's not like any of it is ever getting reprints at this point. All the US-released Gundam Blu Rays are so stupidly expensive, rare, and out of print. I gave up trying to upgrade my DVD versions. A nice thing that all this clutter-thinning has done, though, is that I'm actually WATCHING this stuff again. Got the wife to cry a bit during the 0080 ending. She loved Escaflowne, and we just started Patlabor. I'm promising her that anime isn't just mecha shows, but she doesn't seem to mind. Kodocha and Cowboy Bebop may have to be next.
I started selling my anime cels too. I hadn't opened up the art portfolio holding my collection in about 15 years, and had completely forgotten what I had. Two beautiful Detective Conan cels, Diamond from Gall Force, the main character of Tonde Burin, Android 8, several Violinist of Hameln cels... Found good homes for a few already, but I'm keeping the Hameln ones... That show was just literally made up of frame-able hero shots. (n/t) from Bean.
Baarneeeeee!!! People still love 0080. It has aged very well. You’re right about Hamlin, the show had a higher percentage of key frames than other shows. If you compare original price to current eBay price the vast majority of JP LDs are still worth much less and overall it’s nothing like US stuff that seems to octuple in value regularly. There are still a few obscure Japanese OVA releases that go for $200-300 but honestly it’s like 1 out of 1000 releases. In the US even stuff like Mermaid Forest and Wannabees is worth bank. On that topic I recently got a copy of Urban Square for just $40. Google that. It came from Spain of all places and is in perfect shape.
The thing I want most right now is Hathaway 2 which has yet to be announced on disc in any market. The wait between JP theatrical release and Blueray has been unusually long…presumably it’s Netflix only even in Japan this time but I’m sure they’ll make a disc for Japan eventually. This stuff is somewhat frustrating. I just want to keep enjoying my favorite things the way I always have. I don’t care about dubs or streaming or the price. I just want my Gundam stuff the way I’ve always gotten it but these rassafrassin tech companies are fucking up everything.
