So, has anyone still visiting this forum crossed the bridge of cashing out their game collection? It's always been in the back of my mind as a rainy day fund, but not something I've been tempted to do. I noticed recently that Atari Jaguar stuff gained value and said fuck it, time to gouge some fools. $450 for the console with Cybermorph and around $150 each for Super Burnout and Power Drive Rally. Kind of strange to think I paid $29 for all of it at KB Toys in 1998. I wasn't aware of this Jaguar price creep. From a quick reddit search/scrape a narrative emerged that was framed like a question of whether or not to invest in Jaguar now or later rather than ARE YOU FUCKING STUPID? Apparently Neo Geo stuff is just off the charts now. My disdain for collectors is balanced somewhat by a genuine feeling that if someone is willing to pay $2500 for a copy of Cotton for NGPC, maybe they're actually more interested in it than me. And suddenly it becomes a charitable act to release a copy onto the market. I really don't care much about the dollar value but do find it fascinating that some of us old heads could easily have collections worth 50k, 100k, or even more.

Yep... I'm doing the same right now with my old anime DVDs, thinning down my collection to only my absolute favorites and selling the rest. I started doing it after we moved my widowed mother-in-law out of the house she'd lived in her entire life. Looking at all the stuff in that home that hadn't been touched in decades just flipped my 'stop buying stuff' switch. I pulled out the totes of my dvd collection and started listing stuff on ebay. With physical media dying left and right, some of the prices I'm getting from these discs are pretty crazy. I definitely think about how I sold my NGPC collection around 15 years ago, and what it would instead net me today. I was into p0ker at the time, so I wanted to buy a set of true clay p0ker chips, just like the ca$inos use. So I sold the collection to pay for the chips. Turns out, the chips I bought would probably fetch around 20k right now because the company I bought them from (Paulson) decided to exit the home consumer market and only sell clay chips to ca$inos like 3 months after I bought mine. In reality, I got so much utility out of those chips for years, using them in my weekly p0ker game. We played in luxury with beautiful buttery chips all that time, and as amazing as the NGPC is, I don't think I would have gotten that much use out of my collection in that same time period. So long story short... no regrets! Will I eventually start thinning out my video games as well? Probably! Most all of it just sits in totes doing nothing. I just shudder to think about me dying unexpectedly and leaving my wife looking at everything I own and going: "WTF am I supposed to do with all of this shit?" (n/t) (Bean) (21:49:46 09/20/26 EST)
N64 kids and anime fans who watch dubs converge on DVDs. US anime DVDs are worth ridiculous money in some cases. I barely ever bought any so I don’t have any hard choices to make. Even shit that’s not old is worth money. Something I have, I can’t remember what exactly, maybe the US SD Blu-ray of Xabungle or Ideon or something goes for like $250. I just got it on clearance like six years ago! You wouldn’t believe what Wendy Lee’s autograph goes for now.
“Guys, is this real?”
Who the fuck would counterfeit that?!
Also all the JP anime LDs I got for %1 of original retail are now going for actual money and pretty much every US anime LD is still worth $40 or more no matter what it is. (n/t) (SignOfZeta) (00:12:24 10/07/26 EST)
I was envious of people like you that collected LDs... if only for how beautiful the cover art for them was. For sure shit's crazy expensive if you want the privilege of actually owning physical media now. It's not like any of it is ever getting reprints at this point. All the US-released Gundam Blu Rays are so stupidly expensive, rare, and out of print. I gave up trying to upgrade my DVD versions. A nice thing that all this clutter-thinning has done, though, is that I'm actually WATCHING this stuff again. Got the wife to cry a bit during the 0080 ending. She loved Escaflowne, and we just started Patlabor. I'm promising her that anime isn't just mecha shows, but she doesn't seem to mind. Kodocha and Cowboy Bebop may have to be next.
I started selling my anime cels too. I hadn't opened up the art portfolio holding my collection in about 15 years, and had completely forgotten what I had. Two beautiful Detective Conan cels, Diamond from Gall Force, the main character of Tonde Burin, Android 8, several Violinist of Hameln cels... Found good homes for a few already, but I'm keeping the Hameln ones... That show was just literally made up of frame-able hero shots. (n/t) (Bean) (17:29:02 10/08/26 EST)
I have definitely been thinking about it, but more for games than for other media. Games are easier to get hold of for emulation or FPGA purposes than movies are, so I've been keeping my blu rays and things as movies get delisted all over the place. I regularly sell stuff to free up space, but the idea of selling all of it is pretty daunting. it'd take ages and probably feel weird and gross. so I'm more or less in limbo with it, but it definitely bubbles in the back of my mind. I really hate selling shit, not the parting necessarily but the actual act of selling it. That pretty much keeps me from really moving stuff in itself. I also play my old crap all the time and rarely buy new games so I do get use out of most of it. My kid is 11 now and loves 16-bit which is %75 of my stuff. I have thought about trading Panzer Dragoon Saga for an arcade machine…because that’s how much fucking money it’s worth now, but I’m too lazy to even bother. Luna Ian just bought a house, maybe he has something interesting to add.
Obviously I’m not paying modern prices but I do still buy old old games. I buy like one MVS game a year, I’m up to 14 I think. When I got super into mahjong I bought a bunch of old ¥100 jong junk. I have most of the games I want and I play them so there hasn’t been a lot of action. I haven’t been broke in a long time either. Some day! (n/t) (SignOfZeta) (23:57:52 10/06/26 EST)
I'm extremely gradually selling off the stuff I don't want anymore. Just putting up one thing a week for auction starting at $1, no reserve or whatever. It's kind of fun. (n/t) (Paleface) (22:03:35 10/23/26 EST)
