I didn't play the Genesis versions much but I remember that playing well as a kid. I did get Altered Beast knowing it was the Genesis version. It's a gorgeous 3D version, but eh, it's the *Genesis* version :P Why doesn't Sega port AB and the Golden Axe games to anything? (n/t) from NeoGutsman.
they have! just not in the last 5 years or so (they're definitely on ps3 and 360 collections)
