"Handheld" topic: Miitomo. I've got a lot of thoughts and observations about this thing, but frankly I don't feel like typing them up except for this one point so obvious that nobody would have occasion to make it unless they were some wannabe e-celeb tastemaker of the-not-too distant future. The idea of a game in which it's implied to some degree there is a little guy living in isolation inside your device is a concept that seemed to appear about 15 years ago. That's when it entered my awareness, anyway. I wonder what the earliest example would be. In any case, it's a game design that should be very relevant and tangible these days. Miitomo takes it all the way, in brief spurts, with offhand comments from your Mii about how he's basically stuck in that little room. I'm a little bit surprised Nintendo would even allow the suggestion that your Mii lives in a situation that is potentially anything less than paradise, so that's kind of impressive. But it's obvious they couldn't -- and here's my point of all this -- dream of touching the greatness of Neo Poke-kun in the dude-trapped-in-a-little-room genre of videogames even if they wanted to. So, thank you Nintendo for reminding me of how awesome SNK was.

I agree! and thought about this as well. the first instance I can really think of is the tamagotchi, which is now almost 20 years old, dang! And it is funny to me how the main things we're able to be impressed about with nintendo are generally like "look, you never would've thought they could do X basic thing, but hey! they're doing it! and it's nintendo!" And yeah, if I were in charge of SNK the first thing I would've done when the iphone came out is make a neo poke kun game. (n/t) (exodus) (14:20:20 04/15/16 EST)
I actually find NeoPoke-kun more entertaining. Miitomo is so incredibly boring that it feels like having a second job (ie. needing to grind every day). And for what? The rewards you can get with these points is a far cry from the greatness that was Club Nintendo. (n/t) (Darius) (20:05:01 04/15/16 EST)
Nintendo has always been a guarantee of performance. Never had to restart my Gameboy to get Super Mario Land 2 to work after a game breaking bug. Never had to wait for a patch for Mario 64. Miitomo has crashed in the character creation tool 4 times now. My wifes Phone has fewer trouble running the app, but still crashes every now and then. Im DONE! I was only in it for the points anyway. (n/t) (Mental) (15:06:38 04/16/16 EST)
My only observation with Miitomo is that it's nothing. There is just...nothing. It's nothing. There's nothing to do except to endure a massive stack-up of tiny latencies. You wait a sec, and then Nintendo tells you that you're "so awesome" (you know, SO AWESOME, like a Quasar or a rock concert), then you wait a second for a dialogue bubble to ask you a question only a 7 seven year old would respond to. Then you wait a second to find out you got a thing that's meaningless. Then you get to play a stakes-free pachi game that stinks and is boring. Basically you wait. You wait, after that first little pause/sound for the dialogue bubble to appear, then for it to print the guy's name, then what he says, then a few more pages. Then a total non-sequitur of a facial expression. Then you wait for this, then for that, but the thing you're really waiting for is just more world bubbles, "announcements", vapid praise, etc. When you get sick of one line of question and decide to quit, there is another small latency and then your asshole avatar asks you ONE MORE completely meaningless thing and before it lets you do something else, something that is basically nothing, after a few more micro-waits. There is a seemingly in-depth character creator but the despite new outfits available every single day everyone looks like they were cloned from the same lame-ass non-offensive vanilla wafer. I gave it a shot for a week or so but it's honestly one of those most noneventful boring pointless time wasters I've ever seen. And, as mental mentioned, technical issues do exist. It's not MS/Sony product by any means, but I did have issues with my account and the thing has crashed more in the week I've used it than every other Nintendo product I've used in my 42 year long life combined. If this is what Nintendo's software for 3rd parties is going to be like I'm not worried about the future of Nintendo machines. (SignOfZeta) (21:25:33 04/18/16 EST)
I'm enjoying it a lot. But I like to over-share and it's basically a tool for doing that. (n/t) (Jeurja) (10:00:12 04/22/16 EST)
