I bought KOF Battle de Paradise finally!! I wasn't sure I'd ever get it because a) it's a board game and b) it was always just a bit more expensive than I would've liked. I saw a copy for 15 bucks so I grabbed it - main reason being since I'm working on this SNK collection, it has a unique feature I forgot about. You know how if you put it into a B&W NGP you get a minigame? Well, that minigame is Yosaku, a remake of an early arcade game from SNK that seems to be almost completely lost. This game is not only the only way to easily play an SNK-made version of this game (epoch made a clone for the cassettevision), it also might be a hint to where a board might be, because whoever made this minigame must have played the original, right? Well, that's my NGP update for the month probably!

I remember when it was originally discovered. It was mentioned here for sure because I didn’t have the game yet. Someone had a NGPC with a messed BIOS so it booted in b/w mode only and I thought th y played it. Emulators are the easiest way. That’s the only way I’ve done it since I’ve never had a b/w NGP. I keep holding out for a deal on the white one with chrome buttons and a red stick but I never see it for sale.

I knew of the minigame but I didn’t know it was a uniquely hard to play rare thing. I just thought it was early SNK. And yeah, $15 is great. I like this game, personally. It has a lot of presentation, if not much else. I think I actually played this linked once but now I can’t remember who with.

I don't have my NGPC with me here, so i just watched a video, and it does seem kind of interesting. several minigames and all... lots of luck involved, but it seems like it could be fun for a short time.

Also, I read your translation of Hiroko Yokoyama's story about her time at SNK the other day. Favoritism is a problem wherever you work, but it seems like conservative societies like Japan have it particularly bad when you add blatant sexism to the mix. It's pretty cool she's helping out with the SNK 40th collection thing though.

it's got lots of graphical pizzazz at least! and btw yokoyama wasn't talking about SNK! she was talking about a company she worked at after SNK - likely video system. but she didn't name it. and yeah, that conservatism persists here, but it's sloooowly getting better.

oh yeah, I'm sure it did!! just this particular instance wasn't there :P she did say she tended to work with people at SNK and video system that cared about your output, not your gender, so I know at least two oldschool designers who were good bosses :P

Yeah, I'd imagine those weirdo companies would be cooler and more likely Nintendo or Koei would hold back the ladies for whatever the excuse was at the moment. Its hard to imagine anyone at SNK calling anyone an otaku, even the management. Its a pretty trashy company, lets face it.

New high score (and apparently YouTube world record--my recording inside ; ) of 3280 -- I figured out I'd been swinging at the boars way too early. Also, hunted around for more on Yosaku: dug up what may be a video of the original, and also details on its apparent Toaplan origins.

I got my timeline a little twisted. The Cassette Vision version came out in '81; if the original arcade Yosaku came out two years prior, as that commenter says, that puts it in '79. Haven't been able to find a start date for Orca Corporation, or any other credits to them that early. But if this is all legit, the original game was made by Orca, several of whose members would later go on to form Toaplan, who did some work for SNK.

If thats not an arcade game then I don’t know what it could be. It’s vertical and has decent sound and not too many machines you’d ever port that to would have.

Excellent points. Also, the YouTube account that posted it--although they didn't seem to know what it was exactly--posts pretty much exclusively footage of old arcade games, cabinets, and boards, so probably the only way it fits in their video gallery is if it's an actual arcade board.
