yeah, the rom is probably the big thing. emulation on SNK 40th was tough because we were supporting a dozen individual boards, across a project that we had 8 months to finish. That's always the thing with these! Never enough time to do everything you want to do.

That’s what Mednafen is for. Capitalism doesn’t work. If you want perfection...open source is key. I prefer OpenEMU+Mednafen for OSX and the Wii version of Mednafen is amazing.

Does Mednafen do Neo Geo emulation? The Wikipedia article and official documentation site do not list Neo Geo AES/MVS support, just NeoGeo Pocket. Also, I couldn't find any mention of Mednafen having zero added input delay (as opposed to say Retroarch, which boasts that it does), which is the particular miracle that M2's editions perform.

Well, I guess. M2 made the PCE Mini and it for sure has some sort of lag. Mednafen is very good, that’s all I know. On most platforms it’s command line only for some stupid fucking reason and nobody would waste time with that shit unless it was worth it.

Mednafen was the one NGP emulator I could get to work! : D Interesting point about M2 and the PCE Mini. The only game of theirs I can say off the top of my head that I've tested for input lag is their KOF '96 on PS3 (part of the unfortunately short-lived NEOGEOSTATION line--they started with the earliest NEO games which was probably a mistake; in KOF, '96 was as far as they got), and it matched my test of MVS KOF 2000, whereas PS2 and DC KOFs were at least a frame slower. And I got two of their ShotTriggers shmup ports on PS4, which seemed quite responsive--but I don't have the arcade boards of those for comparison.

If I ever get back to listening to podcasts (which will probably only be after I exhaust all the available old (or sometimes less old BBC stuff) radio mystery/crime/adventure/classic-fiction dramatizations I can find on the internet), that will be one of the first ones I will have to catch back up on!

Oh wow! I haven't been able to find my entrance into the comedy genre in OTR--maybe because my main use for it is listening while painting, and the pacing of comedy might not be as handy for that--so it's good to have a tip on somewhere I might start. The incredible thing about OTR--aside from how top-notch the production of much of it is--is just how MUCH of it was cranked out in those golden days of radio. Aside from BBC stuff--I'm on Poirot now, next will be Miss Marple; not sure these are truly public domain but they're on archive.org, so eh--the US shows I've gone through so far have been the various Sherlock series, and Sam Spade, and those were loads of fun.

Yeah, the BBC still produces radio drama and so does Japan. I don’t get why audio-only non-music content died out, I love it. Also the CBS radio network made decent mysteries and such...well into the 1970s I think. South Africa also did some not so old OTR. Fibber McGee and Molly was one of those shows were the formula never changes, very vaudeville. It lasted a long time and was the most popular show in the country forever. It lasted 680 episodes (still more than The Simpsons as of this writing). Because of this it’s almost like reading a newspaper or some other contemporary chronicle. You learn about the war and rations and all that week by week and Fibber was often the “Goofus” to Molly’s “Gallant” when it came to explaining away the things people grumbled about back then. What I mean by this is that in one episode they talk a bit about gasoline rationing which is something I knew a little about. What I didn’t known was that there was plenty of gas, gas was only rationed mainly to conserve the rubber parts on cars and trucks since for some months literally zero rubber was being imported into the country. I also confess that I like the formula a lot. There is comfort in knowing what you’re going to get if you already like it. Of course I love Suspense! and The Sealed Book. Journey Into Space (BBC) and it’s sequels are terrific. I played the entire series twice through on my radio show.

Ooh. I'm not into terror, which I guess is part of The Sealed Book, but scifi is another OTR genre I've been planning to hit, will definitely have to check out Journey into Space! And yep, the historical perspective you get from these shows (even the incessant ads, although those can get old--one reason to like the ad-free BBC stuff :) is pretty great.

I would get this if it had an option to remove the games' (mostly red) screen flash effects, but I guess that would take editing of the actual games, since it was never a dip option. Some dude I know on YouTube who is also flash-sensitive told me excitedly that the collection has "light options," but I can't figure out what the devil he means by that.

yeah there's no way to stop that stuff, we got no code, only roms. III has white flashes too. the only thing that might help slightly is the scanlines filter which generally darkens the screen a bit, but I wouldn't rely on that being actually useful for someone who's sensitive to it.

He just found the Wii version of Samurai Shodown Anthology took out the red screen flashes; and then I found the Wii "The King of Fighters Collection: The Orochi Saga" also took out red screen flashes. The games are too flashy FX and UI-wise for me anyway (and the KOF Collection has pretty bad emulation; and the Wii doesn't have my favored type of Hori arcade stick ; ) but still, a useful discovery and I think he's up for them, so yay.

Naturally you'll want to hold out for the just-announced PS4 and Switch "Shockbox Limited Edition" packaged in "a replica of an actual NeoGeo box." ; ) Pre-orders open June 2nd, shipping August 28th. Limited to 1,200 units on PS4, 1,800 on Switch. Price still under wraps, although publisher Pix'n Love's previous "Shockbox" release of SS1 (with SS!2) for Switch was $132.53 (released in May, now sold out, like all their previous game editions). Pix'n Love are French and I *think* this is technically an EU release, but Switch and PS4 are region-free for games so I suppose that shouldn't really matter.

Normally when it comes to games worked on by S:NGP members I spend money somewhere between Drunken Sailor and Ronald Reagan but this one is hard. I already have everyone's favorite SS (II) on MVS and Saturn versions of III and IV and really I don't care at all for the level of violence in the later games. Its also probably double what the SNK 40th cost and I actually played that...

well the level of violence is actually reduced in V Perfect! They had to steal frames away from the overkills in order to make room for cutscenes and story! But yeah, I mean... There has to be some cult of GBA school out there that fixates on "what could the full power of the GBA really do?" like how people talk about how to make the PCE Arcade Card not useless. Those people, you'd think, would be really into Stuntman (GBA) because it really is pretty impressive. Sadly its not a cute 2D redux of the overdone PS2 game but instead it itself is also overdone. Fully polygonal and all that shit with sorta decent physics. Its basically a AAA PS1 game...so rough nobody can stand to look at it anymore...except I think we were already getting into that phase even when this game was new. IIRC Crazy Taxi is the closest thing to it graphics-wise. BTW I prefer this to the "real" versions. The pace of the menues and tutorials and stuff is way less frustrating.
