Hello, I think there should be a holiday where people give old stuff they don't want anymore to their friends and family. This would be a better holiday than Christmas or even Kwanzaa since not only would the recipient benefit by getting something they might appreciate, but also the giver would benefit by getting rid of something. Plus, companies wouldn't profit and might even ultimately take a loss. The only thing is that I don't know who to send my proposal to. President Biden? The UN Security Council? The Pope?<br> <br>Any advice would be appreciated here. I'll consider naming this new holiday after you if you can help.

I think it was announced before this thread but it does look interesting! It can only record super short stuff, but it's neat! I will not buy one because I don't really go to shows anymore, but it seemed like a cool thing for recording live music to a one-off record or something like that.

If the discs are acetate like the other ones we were talking about, that's not plastic, it's plant based. However, they can also only be played back a few times before they're unlistenable.

There are plant based plastics. There’re still plastic. Petroleum isn’t a plant…but it was once.

And yeah, acetates vary in quantity but the most well made durable one will be about as good as a Soundsheet. Louder but way more fragile.

With home vinyl cutting though I’d think sound quality would be something you’d never be able to do well with. A good 80s tape deck or any modern standalone digital recorder with a brand name will do an amazing job and not produce a massive pile of “bad burns”.

Apparently this is actually an older thing from Gakken that TE is either re-releasing or copying. I agree with you that it's a waste of plastic, but you also don't want to know what I think about actual vinyl records.

I found a bunch of home recording acetate discs at a thrift store once and was disappointed to find that they were mostly blanks. I can confirm that these had indeed been manufactured before 1976.

Do you know what kind of machine was used to record on them? Were they 12”? The only acetate discs I’ve seen were cut on normal record lathes. There was at least one f0rm of aluminum transcr1ption discs used in the Lomax days where the mechanicals weren’t too huge but still professionally priced for sure.

These were for a home setup, not professional. I'm sure the prices were insane for the time, but there's always rich people who are willing to buy things like this. The discs I had were 7" and white (or kind of cream colored, but maybe originally white). They were made out of fiberglass or something with an acetate surface layer as far as I could tell. I later gave all the blank ones to a friend who had found a recorder at a thrift store, though it wasn't working. I did keep a couple that had been recorded onto (nothing interesting, they were just personal letters or memos and had been recorded in the late 1950s). I don't know what ever happened to the ones I kept, I don't think I have them anymore, but they were [a lot like this if not identical](https://www.ebay.com/itm/Wilcox-Gay-Record-Disc-Hank-Snow-Written-on-Label/353413096868).

it's a nice idea, but also sounds potentially like it'd turn into junk offloading. also I don't like holidays, but maybe this would turn me around. I'll try to consider my trips to Goodwill mini holidays and see how that works out. If I see the pope there I'll ask what he thinks.
