i didn't know, really, but had no way to find out! i didn't test positive when i got home either, with a different test, so i suspect it wasn't covid. also the symptoms were so flu-like. fever, runny nose, dizziness, sinus stuff. of course, i have never knowingly had covid, so maybe all those symptoms are there, but my sense is covid has more stuff than that.

followups:

i did find out that they don't call it covid at all over there and call it the corona virus 100% of the time. learned this while in a drug store asking for a test and the pharmacist was like i have no idea what you're talking about, and a fellow patron had to be like "it's the corona virus." also i just learned you can't type japanese characters here. i suppose it's possible! but i felt like it was the flu because: 1) i was vaccinated for covid 2) i didn't have the 2023 flu vaccine yet 3) the flu was "going around" tokyo and knocking folks out left and right and covid wasn't in a spike there 4) i didn't test positive once with 3 tests 5) symptoms were familiar and manageable with flu medicine 6) nobody else that i met with during that time got covid. it's of course totally possible it was still covid, but with all those factors the flu feels the most likely.
