It's so fucking stupid. They've gone out of their way to make sure the controls are the same as previous games, when they should be improving the camera and changing the controls so obvious things like "put the inventory on the touchscreen" happen and make the game MORE FUN TO PLAY. I'm aware that if I just got a new 3DS it would be more playable, but I bet things still happen like you accidentally sharpen your sword still happen all the time. This series is a perfect example of why Japanese games are in a ghetto. They people designing them are stuck in like 2004. (n/t) from aerisdead.

I won't dispute that the devs are continually beholden to carrying over control schemes from previous MH games. For shits and giggles I charged my old PSP up and launched MH Unite to try it again earlier this year. Wow, I was surprised how much made it over to MH4 in terms of control, and a bit disappointed. I will say that once you figure it out, you can customize the quick shortcuts and functionality of the lower screen in MH4 (and I'm guessing MH3 - never played that one) and have different layouts saved, but it's still noooot quiiiite perfect when you're switching for functionality sets when fighting two completely different boss-level monsters. I don't have the sharpening issue much since I assign that to a touch screen sub-menu but dangit when I accidentally sheathe my weapon at the wrong time, etc. But yeah, figuring out how to customize your lower screen is really confusing and frustrating when you can't resize or stretch parts of the little "app" style buttons in more logical ways. I want four inventory items in a certain way on the lower screen but the game won't let me even though I have made room at the bottom, etc. I do like the button you can add that lets you cycle through big monster lock-ons (then tap the L shoulder to re-focus on that beast) which is useful (but not on the screen or assigned by default wtffkkk unless you do it yourself I think).
