The clamshell design protects the screens. Also, while I have not held a Switch "tank" is clearly not the word to use. The GB was a tank. Does your Switch seriously feel like it would survive what GBs can easily shake off? (n/t) from SignOfZeta.
The 3DS problem is a well known one. The lower screen edges stick out too much, which presses into the upper screen. Nintendo even provides a foam inlay to keep between the screens. They knew. Hold a Switch once, its extremely sturdy. The ridiculous YouTube tests have backed that up, a dozen drops on concrete and no real problems.
