I saw a Switch in a store once. I hesitated...glad I was trigger happy that time I saw a WiiU. This not being able to buy consoles thing is really confusing me. Target had SKIDS of both NES and SNES at the same time when they were current. It seems like that’s a thing of the past now. I don’t remember a time in console history where just getting the damned machines was such an issue for so long. I understand the Switch shortage because it’s new. The Wii U, the NES Classic, and SNES Classic were all scarce though. I’m sitting here with literally hundreds of dollars they can have if they can manage satisfy the demand of people who need 12 of everything first. If I miss an entire generation of Nintendo because I won’t pay $$$$ or wait outside of TRU at 5:30 am then am I still a fan?

You had a different Wii U experience than I - around here there were just stacks of them sitting in target, getting discounted the after a couple months. Because of that experience Nintendo made fewer Switches - I think the joycons are also complex to make, and those tegra chips had to get remanufactured? Like Nvidia had a bunch to dump, but then the demand caught up and they hadn't made more. that's my perception!

At first, back when WiiU were white, they were plentiful. After they redid the packaging and only offered black ones they pretty much stopped making them. It was years before the Switch came out. Try getting a used WiiU for a decent price and you’ll see what I’m talking about. They’re still like $200 even now...used. Considering they launched at $300 five years ago that would indicate supplies are not plentiful. Nintendo sells them refirbed on eBay for $200 now and you only get Nintendoland with it. They got very very careful with production well before the Switch. I have never seen a NES Classic or SNES Classic. I don’t know anyone who has one. The stores don’t even have a section for them because they never have the product for more than a few minutes. I understand localized shortages around holidays but for a system to debut selling like crazy until the thing goes out of production seems weird to me. Why don’t they just open orders to make the things until people lose interest and stop placing orders? I feel like I’m trying to get a Ferrari or something that isn’t limited to millions and millions of units.

I've got a snes classic! and all the targets in the bay area have 6 or so right now. but I do see your point! they are indeed purposefully constraining until they see what the demand is.

Well, they do it to drive demand.

in the case of the switch, I'm not sure that's true... you'd want to have a whole bunch available right around now.

They do what, brainwash customers into buying six of a thing just to sell layer? How did they manage that?

If I knew that I'd probably be a lot richer. : o Ooh I do have a relevant story though: a friend of mine got caught up in a rush of his co-workers who found out a local store had a bunch of NES Classics when those were the thing, so they all jumped in a car, charged over there, and bought at least one each. Later my friend wondered why the hell he bought it, he hadn't been planning to get one at all. He never opened it; sold it months later to a friend. He works at a different place now so hopefully he won't get rolled into buying a SNES one. Oh and bonus story: my brother thought he would go one better, and got me a 620-in-one NES Classic rip-off off of Amazon for my birthday--not that I had ever expressed any interest in the NES Classic or anything. The "MINI GAME Anniversary Edition Entertainment System" has horrible video out (composite, of course), but I will admit the D-pad turned out to be less tortuous than it looked at first glance. The games are mostly hacks or bootlegs, like the cute "Fruit Pig" where your pig character catches and eats falling fruit. My brother was surprised and a little downcast when I told him the thing was a bootleg. : P

ha ha, your brother did the classic 90s mom thing. "But mooooom, I wanted a SEGA, not a NINTENDO"

that was a constant challenge for me across the years. I've finally gotten it down to just my mom and her sister that get me gifts (and who I have to give gifts to). Well, and my girlfriend, but that's actually fun!

WHY THE FUCK DO YOU OF ALL PEOPLE HAVE A SNES CLASSIC!?! You have Nintendo hate in your DNA. I have a 2 year old that would love to play with this and you’re probably just keeping it around so you can brag about how it’s still in the box for the next decade. Amazon is currently asking $180 with Prime shipping for a SNES Classic. I could almost buy a WiiU for that! :)

I have a reason! I bought it specifically so that I could see how Nintendo would present and market a 20 year old unreleased game. turns out they did it in a really weird way. In english, it says "never released" - not "never before released" or "previously unreleased" (though it does say that in spanish), it says never released. also it advertises having "over 20" games, so starfox 2 doesn't count as one of "the games," it's a bonus. So much so that you have to unlock it by playing starfox 1. Also interesting that they put the switch colors on the top of the box to try to unify the branding. So yeah, that's why I bought it! Also I saw somebody on twitter say "preorders up on best buy" and I just clicked over and got one super easily. I wouldn't have one if I'd had to actually try hard to get it.

also to try starfox 2 - also I assumed the controllers would be USB which would've been worth it to me, but they sure were not.

I would assume they were Wii compatible, like the NES one. Btw, I just went to Target tonight, about an hour ago, still no SNES Classic. Aparently the Targets in SF that all have six of these also have guard dogs chained to the display. Either that or they were long gone before you left the store yourself because there ain’t fucking nobody with a SNES Classic sitting on a shelf right now unless the price is double.
