I saw a Switch in a store once. I hesitated...glad I was trigger happy that time I saw a WiiU. This not being able to buy consoles thing is really confusing me. Target had SKIDS of both NES and SNES at the same time when they were current. It seems like that’s a thing of the past now. I don’t remember a time in console history where just getting the damned machines was such an issue for so long. I understand the Switch shortage because it’s new. The Wii U, the NES Classic, and SNES Classic were all scarce though. I’m sitting here with literally hundreds of dollars they can have if they can manage satisfy the demand of people who need 12 of everything first. If I miss an entire generation of Nintendo because I won’t pay $$$$ or wait outside of TRU at 5:30 am then am I still a fan?

You had a different Wii U experience than I - around here there were just stacks of them sitting in target, getting discounted the after a couple months. Because of that experience Nintendo made fewer Switches - I think the joycons are also complex to make, and those tegra chips had to get remanufactured? Like Nvidia had a bunch to dump, but then the demand caught up and they hadn't made more. that's my perception!

At first, back when WiiU were white, they were plentiful. After they redid the packaging and only offered black ones they pretty much stopped making them. It was years before the Switch came out. Try getting a used WiiU for a decent price and you’ll see what I’m talking about. They’re still like $200 even now...used. Considering they launched at $300 five years ago that would indicate supplies are not plentiful. Nintendo sells them refirbed on eBay for $200 now and you only get Nintendoland with it. They got very very careful with production well before the Switch. I have never seen a NES Classic or SNES Classic. I don’t know anyone who has one. The stores don’t even have a section for them because they never have the product for more than a few minutes. I understand localized shortages around holidays but for a system to debut selling like crazy until the thing goes out of production seems weird to me. Why don’t they just open orders to make the things until people lose interest and stop placing orders? I feel like I’m trying to get a Ferrari or something that isn’t limited to millions and millions of units.

I've got a snes classic! and all the targets in the bay area have 6 or so right now. but I do see your point! they are indeed purposefully constraining until they see what the demand is.
