I bounced hard off the PS4 demo (see entry 1598) when it first came out. Maybe it took me playing through USFIV (see entry 1599) in the mean time to learn that I can just relax and have fun goofing around in a Street Fighter. Because there are lots of things that aren't my favorite fighting game things in SF6--throw loops, the punishing corner play, the heavy meter management, the jerky throw animations, Luke, the three in-game currencies (no currencies in the demo though ^ _^), etc--but it seems like there's still fun to be had here. It plays fast and can get pretty loose and wild; it feels VERY un-SFV-like in that regard, which is no doubt deliberate on Capcom's part after they struggled for years to muster enthusiasm among the hardcore for V's very prescribed play style. Oh yeah watching Daigo's Twitch streams https://www.twitch.tv/daigothebeastv helped show me 6's flexibility, too--like, at first it looks like he's always doing the same combos, and so I thought oh no it's V's cookie-cutter combos over and over again; but then you notice when things get scrambly and optimal combos aren't necessarily an option, he can fall back on all kinds of improvised hits and combos and shenanigans instead. So I've been finding his SF6 Ken way more interesting to watch than his SFV Guile, and I guess it made me want to check this stuff out for myself a bit more. It's a bad demo in that you can't even play a single character's Arcade mode, and there's only Ryu and that awful Luke to try out. But I actually sat through the Beginner Tutorials this time to get a slight grasp on the Drive Meter stuff (not yet on the Drive Rush though : P), and I found myself having some goofy fun in Ryu vs CPU Ryu action in the Bull Run "Extreme Match" gimmick mode and VS CPU mode (this time CPU level 7 seemed pretty challenging, and lvl 6 pretty chill), so right there I'm already getting about as much out of it as I do out of 3rd Strike, so what the heck. So this PC demo did its job and convinced me to buy the game. : P Oh it was Ymer on selectbutton.net who mentioned the SF6 benchmark app--see entry 1655. |
