Multi-system emulator; seems to have relatively advanced NGPC emulation--can run Dokodemo Mahjong Color (see entry 397) in color, for instance--but requires NGPC BIOS file.

Lead Dev "Near" used to go by Japanese character for name; most active current dev LukeUsher IDs as UK-based.

Near info was from https://emulation.gametechwiki.com/index.php/Ares

Successor to creator Near's higan (see entry 1567).

Unlike Mednafen (see entry 1537) and Mesen (see entry 1536), ares can load PC Engine CD games from compressed .chd files; this means it's gonna be my go-to PCE emulator.

Requires a GBA BIOS! Dang.

It doesn't require a BIOS for like NES, SNES, MD, and non-A GB.

ares is currently highly rated for SNES emulation ( https://emulation.gametechwiki.com/index.php/Super_Nintendo_emulators#Comparisons ); not so high for NES or GB (but my current GB emu, Mesen, isn't highly rated for THAT, either; Mesen IS highly rated for NES, and pretty well-rated for SNES).

I'm going to use ares for SNES emulation--it's better than Mesen at cropping border areas, at least in Mr. Do, the game I compared in ares and Mesen.

It doesn't have Mesen's per-color palette control for GB and border control for NES (which is a huge but NESessary pain as NES games vary wildly in their bordering, and flashing border areas), so Mesen's still the one for those.

Dang, while ares is good about NOT having borders around SNES games, it DOES have borders around PC Engine games--unlike Mednafen's PCE emulation. So I guess it's back to uncompressed bins and cues for me. : P There probably aren't more than a handful--if that--of Super CD games I'll be sticking to though so no biggie I guess.

(The 3 PCE rips I have currently--DDII, Gate of Thunder 3-in-1, Riot Zone--are 939 MB as .chd files, and 1.47 GB as bin/cue. I'm not sure ImgBurn ripped them as these single bin files they're in now, or if that happened from converting them back and forth with CHDMAN; handy that they're only one .bin file each, at any rate.)

Comparing Mednafen and ares in Shadow Dancer (Gen), the colors are brighter but maybe a tad too bright? with ares; ares also crops the picture slightly for some reason.

Ares I think just recently added a ton of shaders. Ones I like are misc--retro-palettes and vhs--VHSPro. (There's a ReShade version--see entry 1851--of VHSPro.)

^ Specifically, I like those shaders for Mr. Do. ^ _^

Shadow flicker is super bad in ares in Super Fire Pro X Premium--would have to use Mesen for that.

In Settings - Options there's a "Run-Ahead" option that says "Removes one frame of input lag, but doubles system requirements." Seems fine for Mr. Do (see entry 1552). ^ _^

Ares is doing some kind of exclusive full-screen thing now--I mean, I can't task-switch out of it when it's full-screen. Bleh. Back to Mesen.
