That was my experience with this game too. At first I tried to learn mahjong proper but quickly tossed that idea and just felt my way through. By the time I unlocked everything I was operating on pure instinct, couldn't even necessarily rationalize or explain what I was doing. It was a pretty interesting experience.

I just bumbled through it not understanding things once in a while but basically getting the idea. In the 16-bit era I played so many damned imports and had zero knowledge of Japanese at all so I got good at figuring out shit like Tokimeki Memorial or Carnage Heart by pure bumbling and raw conjecture. This is the same sort of thing, I guess. from SignOfZeta.

Follow Ups:

Playing that way how long did it take you to unlock everything? Did you get the panel pictures too? What skill level? This is all just for curiosity's sake. I find it interesting that someone with no real knowledge of mahjong could push through but I have noticed on the lowest settings that it's pretty easy to create a closed basic hand (4 melds and a pair) so if you only know that much it's totally doable, i guess. For me, having learned a lot of the rules of mahjong except some of the tricker hands, It's taken about 3 days of moderate play on 3 and 4 skill to unlock about 2/3rds of the stuff. I'll probably up the difficulty more for the remaining stuff and try to finish the game by Monday since I have a few days off.

Took about a week or two of intense play to unlock everything, probably on the lowest possible difficulty but I don't recall for sure. I vividly remember one night playing from 1 to 6 AM. That was horrible and irresponsible but I was on a roll and didn't want to lose my grasp by sleeping. I think it was the final set of pictures I needed and managed to pull it off just after the sun came up. God, this game really was a trip.

I just powered up my copy for the first time in forever. I don't know how much I unlocked since I don't know what the full list is, but I only have the full panel collection for one girl, a few panels for another, and none of the other panels for any girls. I have "scenes" 1-4 for all girls and and sometimes a scene 5. Do all the girls have a Scene 5?

Yes, except the girl from... SRM II? Basically this: The last girl you play in Story mode will give you all of her scenes. The last scene is boobs for every girl except one who's last scene is her skirt (she takes off her top in the second to last). The last girl you play is usually the first girl you play but not always. Anyway, on GamFaqs there is an FAQ that is NOT by Gutsy that gives you the order of choices to pick to get every girl in the game. Not every girl has the same number of scenes but if she is in your replay gallery you have them all (only the "final boss" girl gets added). Panels: Unlocked in free mode. This plays a bit more like standard mahjong but it is still battle style. The better you do the more panels you unlock. Once you have all the scenes and all the panels for 8 girls the game is 100 percent complete.
