Requisite "I bought an NGPC game" post: Of course it's Super Real Mahjong P. Coll. I got it for 35 CIB after months of hoping to find a deal on eBay. That's a better deal than I had hoped for! I like the little die cut window on the box that shows off the cartridge label. Is it unique to this box? I don't recall ever seeing that before. As for the game I think it's fucking great, quickly one of my favorite mahjong games I own. This is partially due to my NGPC bias but it really does feel right at home on the system, right down to the "NGPC fighter" style sprites for each of the girls during the closing credits. It's got a really nice, basic set of options and the eight levels of difficulty are tuned well. One doesn't usually see this in a battle/strip mahjong game, only in the serious 4-player sims. It's super beginner friendly and would be an instant recommendation to people interested in learning to play except it's hard to find and on the NGPC. The background music is repetitive but I like the noise channel sound of the tiles clacking about. Oddly, it does not allow for open tanyo (exposed all simples) which I think other SRMs do. Wish I could read story mode as mundane as I'm sure it is. Also, nice animations. Also, boobs, although the boobs could be gone and this would still hold up amazingly well.
A great, easier to get, sorta, mahjong game to learn on is Tottemo E Mahjong + for PS4 (non + version available on Vita)
Follow Ups:
hmm, it's tempting - but I'm not very good at mahjong, and it's a bit of a challenge to learn/remember everything! It feels worthwhile though, so!! hmmmmmm (n/t) (exodus) (18:10:28 10/29/15 EST)
This is the only Mahjong game I've ever put real time into. I'm pretty sure I unlocked all the...boobs, or whatever it is you unlock. Incidentally, I never read a FAQ. I just bumbled through it not understanding things once in a while but basically getting the idea. In the 16-bit era I played so many damned imports and had zero knowledge of Japanese at all so I got good at figuring out shit like Tokimeki Memorial or Carnage Heart by pure bumbling and raw conjecture. This is the same sort of thing, I guess. (SignOfZeta) (23:59:01 10/29/15 EST)
Oh man I remember its announcement. I wanted to get excited, really did! The crushing reality of the NGPC going down was so depressing. Nigeronpa comes to mind. You guys were talking about the job system, and i assumed you could literally get different jobs in the game. Never seriously played an RPG at that point. Hadnt done a lot of things at that point. Beating SRMJ P-Coll is one of my greatest game achievements. I had to teach myself more or less through this game. I ended up trading my finished copy with a friend's "new" copy so he wouldn't have to finish it on his own (I'm was too nice and now I can't be put out to clear this game again. Oh well.). I could have sworn there were some pachinko NGPC games that had a windowed box but I could be wrong. I can't find much on eBay these days to compare packaging. Oh, and pop this game into an original B&W NGP for a neat Easter Egg. (n/t) (NeoGutsman) (23:58:20 11/16/15 EST)
What else besides Tottemo E Mahjong Plus (and non +) do you recommend? I have a Vita and a PS3 (and might get a Japanese 3DS in the near future). I don't mind something like Tottemo E Mahjong, Suchi Pie, or something weird. (n/t) (NeoGutsman) (00:35:45 11/17/15 EST)
I played this game to death when it first game out and it was always awesome. Pcoll was so good that I even imported a Saturn and all the SRMJ games on that. Oh, the fond memories. =) (n/t) (Darius) (18:38:01 11/20/15 EST)
