I just cleared Level 3 with the Fatal Fury Team. I’m starting to get back into the flow of this thing. Combos are...Street Fighter, basically. You can’t two-in-one unless the first hit connects (not blocked) which makes my Ralf sorta weaker...Tizok rules, that’s all I’ll say about him. Terry’s Leader SDM is hilariously huge. Joe almost feels like CvS2 Joe. These backgrounds sorta suck! Eolith/SFZ1 looking bland garbage. Alternate colors also suck. After I get bored of this I need to get 2002...The Chizuru sisters confuse the SHIT out of me. For sure they are worse than Mukai.

Lots of things combo more easily or juggle more but normal two-in-ones are harder. The Tag thing is a huge adjustment. No maxing up, no normal SDMs, and no Takuma. I can’t play this the same way I played 98 AT ALL. I cleared level 1 last night after accidentally KOing Kusanagi with a non-super and ditching the game three times in a row. I guess my team is Ash, Ralf, Mary, but I may have to get rid of Marry if I can’t get her to work better. She is a little different from 98. I could probably make Terry work. (n/t) from SignOfZeta.

I like the desert night stage; I think it's one of the best KOF stages ever. Mukai's stage is pretty cool and the cobblestone street is okay, the rest are pretty forgettable yeah. I like some of the alt colors just because they're so weird but some *are* eyesores, I suppose that's what living on the edge gets you.

Yeah, both boss stages are really good. Most backgrounds have very little movement in them and if they do it’s a sort of full screen tile update sequence, FMV BGs I guess. You don’t see distinctive things catching your eye like in KOF 98. It’s also true that if you have a crappy TV KOF 98 has such uniform brightness of the BGs and characters that it can look bad and be hard to distinguish them. I think they muted the BGs on purpose to some extent to reduce this.

Huh, didn't know that about 98. I haven't had that problem with it but I'm using a different type of monitor I suppose--I *do* have that problem with plenty of other fighting games, though. Fighting EX Layer has that problem in a few backgrounds, for instance. ; )

I think ‘97 is actually worse at this, IIRC. It’s more of an issue when you’re using stock composite out on the crappy TV that came with your one room apartment, which I was doing at the time the Saturn version was new. It was a lot easier to see Street Fighter Zero 2 on the same setup.

'97 put more emphasis on making the locations look kind of realistic, eh in a way, so I guess that could make sense. SF always went for brighter colors.
